Door County Supports Repair of Potawatomi Tower

During its October meeting, the Door County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution supporting repair of the Potawatomi State Park Observation Tower. The resolution asked that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) assess the repairs needed for the tower from a historical perspective and encouraged the DNR to repair the tower in a timely fashion.

Door County is the latest entity to support repair of the tower over the DNR’s stated intent to demolish the structure. Others that have supported the repair include Rep. Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay), the City of Sturgeon Bay, the Town of Nasewaupee and the Door County Historical Society.

The Sturgeon Bay Historical Society Foundation (SBHSF) has meanwhile received a date of Nov. 20 for a hearing before the Historic Preservation Review Board on whether the tower will be included on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. The SBHSF applied for that status for the tower in July.
