Join Door Shakespeare July 1 at 8 pm for an evening of merriment in their opening night performance of Twelfth Night directed by Joseph Hanreddy. All ages are encouraged to attend this classic comedy that manages to explore the complexities of love, truth and gender, all while never straying from the light, fun air that guides the play. Excitement abounds; jousting, cross-dressing, and unrequited love interests will keep audience members on the edge of their seats.
Twelfth Night begins with Viola, who survives a terrible shipwreck, stumbling ashore to Illyria, believing that her twin brother Sebastian is drowned. Meanwhile a nobleman Orsino languishes in the unfulfilled love he harbors for Lady Olivia, who has pledged to remain unmarried. A friendly sea captain reveals Orsino’s courtship of Olivia to Viola, and so she dons a disguise as a page named Cesario. Danger, adventure and romance await Viola as she tries to make it in this strange land, where everything and everybody are not what they seem.
This summer, Door Shakespeare also transforms the Garden at Björklunden into Sherwood Forest with their production of The Heart of Robin Hood by David Farr, directed by Shanara Gabrielle. This retelling of the classic story presents a relatable and sharp-witted heroine, Marion, and poses serious questions about the nature of power, greed, and resilience. Like so many Shakespearean works, The Heart of Robin Hood features many misadventures, misconstrued messages, and opportunities for mischief.
Audience members will find themselves toe-tapping to the original music composed by Scott Campbell. Original compositions are featured prominently in both productions, giving the stage a bit of a modern twist.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $19 for students and $9 for children.
