First Day Hikes

Anyone looking to start their New Year’s resolution for better health can start the year off on the right foot by participating in First Day Hikes on Jan. 1, including at Peninsula State Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park.

On a First Day Hike, visitors can enjoy one- to two- mile walks through diverse, beautiful natural areas, led by park rangers and volunteers. Most hikes include additional activities such as campfires, s’mores, crafts, costume contests and storytelling.

Members of the Friends of Peninsula State Park will lead the New Year’s Day hike from 10 am to noon at Pen Park. Meet at Weborg Shelter. Bring water bottle, binoculars, field guide and dress for the weather with hiking boots or snowshoes. After the hike, enjoy a hot beverage around a warming fire. Purchase admission sticker at park headquarters or self-registration station. No pets please. Call 920.854.5976 for more information.

Whitefish Dunes State Park will hold two First Day Hikes. In the morning there will be a First Day Winter Detectives Hike from 9 to 10 am in search of animal tracks and other clues to uncover the secret lives of animals. Join the naturalist for a short hike then warm with hot beverage.

In the afternoon there will be a Winter Wears First Day Hike from 2 to 3 pm. Join the naturalist for a short hike then warm by the shelter building fire with hot beverage. For both hikes, meet at the Nature Center. Call 920.823.2400 for more information.
