Free State Park Weekend, Bird Fest & More Weekend Plans

With the season officially welcomed in with Memorial Day, next weekend’s activities are going to get you outside and keep you there. A great mix of park visits as well as strange Door County events are sure to keep you amused.

Friday, June 2

City-Wide Garage Sale

Taking place both Friday and Saturday of this weekend, Sturgeon Bay’s garages will erupt with old trinkets, clothes, and oddities ripe for the picking. Drive through town and you’ll surely find something worth taking home.

Wings Over Weborg

An hour in Peninsula State Park will give you a taste of bird identification during an easy stroll. An excellent start to Free Fun Weekend. 9am-10am.

Art/Speaks

Write On, Door County presents a creative opportunity for those who wish to push their relationship with writing. Hosted by Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, participants will be led by an accomplished writer in the practice of using words to comment on a piece of visual art. Writers of all skill levels are welcome. 10:30am-12pm.

Saturday, June 3

Free Fun Weekend

Once a year, Wisconsin State Parks become completely free to use for an entire weekend. With each park hosting a number of fun activities for visitors of all ages, all that’s left to do is visit your favorite park (or one you’ve been meaning to spend more time in) and enjoy their offerings. Also featured this weekend is a lift on requirements for fishing licences (including trout and salmon tags) on all Wisconsin waters. Celebrate all day Saturday and Sunday.

International Migratory Bird Fest

Take advantage of the rare opportunity to take part in guided hikes and look on as trained bird banders capture, band and release birds on Plum Island. Family friendly; transportation will be made available from Gills Rock and from Washington Island.

Sturgeon Bay Farmers’ Market

Door County’s largest farmers’ market takes place in downtown Sturgeon Bay. A great stop for fresh produce and baked goods for the weekend, as well as for checking out some great handmade goods. 8:30am-12pm.

Sunday, June 4

The Pink Classic

Horseshoe Bay Golf Club puts on their annual Pink Classic this weekend, so-called for the attire which may win you prizes for being “Prettiest in Pink”. Those who would rather not don a pink bunny suit can also partake in live music, food, drinks, raffle, a live auction and more. 8am registration, 9am tee-off, 1:30pm raffle and live auction.

Zach Vogel @ Beach Harbor Resort

Local rock and roller sure to liven up your afternoon, Vogel is known for his performances at Steel Bridge Songfest and for his collaboration with the likes of pat mAcdonald. If you like rock, great; if you want a few laughs as well, even better. Come out for a late lunch or early dinner at Waterfron Mary’s Bar & Grill at Sturgeon Bay’s Beach harbor Resort. 2pm-6pm.

Björklunden Spring Gala Fundraiser

Lawrence University’s northern campus lies nestled in the coastal woods just south of Baileys Harbor. Sunday evening they’re throwing a fundraiser gala for Northern Door Children’s Center with wine and food tasting, a silent auction, and live music. Mingle with others in Björklunden’s Vail Hall while you snack and enjoy the fading sunlight on the coast of Lake Michigan. 5:30pm-8:30pm. $40/ticket.
