Door County Art League (DCAL) jeweler Kim Pedler will be presenting two informal sessions from 10 am – 5 pm on Sunday, August 17, at the Gallery of the Door County Art League, located at the back of the Top of the Hill Shops on Highway 42 and County F in Fish Creek on Spring Road.

Pedler, an award-winning goldsmith, is calling the first demonstration “Gem Identification and Fun Facts.” He hopes to educate those in attendance about the characteristics of various gems – where they are mined and their historical uses.

Pedler’s second session, “A Display of Wax Carvings to Illustrate the Steps Involved in Creating a Wax Model,” will show the process of creating custom-designed jewelry. He intends to display a drawing of the piece he will be creating, as well as examples of the wax model in progressive states of completion.

A graduate of Purdue University, with a degree in Economics, Pedler apprenticed with his stepfather, a goldsmith, for six years. A goldsmith for 26 years, Pedler owns a gallery on Neenah Avenue in Sturgeon Bay where, in addition to crafting one-of-a-kind pieces for customers, he creates custom designs, such as rings, pendants, and earrings, to sell from his showcases. He also provides repair services.

The day prior, on Saturday, August 16, oil painter/pastel artist Sally Berner will be demonstrating at the gallery. Berner has been painting oils for about 20 years. She usually paints on stretched canvas or canvas on board with bristle or soft brushes. Because Berner’s main themes are animals, she takes many photographs of dogs, cows, horses, and wildlife in hopes of catching intriguing light or an interesting pose. For animal studio works, she first sketches the composition lightly in pencil, as those are her most detailed paintings. When working on still-life or landscapes, she draws directly with paint.

The Door County Art League is comprised of painters, sculptors, jewelers, potters, photographers, fabric artists, and more. All types of original art produced by a number of DCAL members are on display and available for sale at the gallery. Business hours are Thursday through Monday, 10 am – 5 pm.
