Get Ready for Christmas Bird Count

October programs at The Ridges Sanctuary can give beginning and seasoned birders the skills to enjoy bird watching as well as everything needed to participate in events like the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count.

On Oct. 22 at 1 pm, join a Ridges naturalist for a Countdown to the Christmas Bird Count Workshop on Bird Feeders. With all the different types of feeders and the variety of seed to put in them, how do you make the right choice? The answer depends on the kinds of birds you wish to attract.

Learn about the different types of feeders and the best placement for them along with other tips that will enhance backyard bird watching. This workshop is the first in a series of four. Future sessions include Species and Habitat Identification (Nov. 5), Optics (Nov. 19) and Field Guides and Reference Materials (Dec. 3).

Bird watching is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States. Beginning birders can pick up the tricks of the trade at Backyard Birding 101, Oct. 25 at 1 pm. This two-hour program contains information on basic bird identification, habitats, bird behavior and equipment.

Programs meet at the Marshall Cabin, 8288 Cty. Q in Baileys Harbor. Program fees are $10 for Ridges members and $13 for the general public. For more information visit ridgessanctuary.org.
