Greens N Grains Keeps it Local

Greens N Grains natural food store in Egg Harbor is approaching sustainability in numerous directions, but perhaps the most exciting is the partnering with local producers to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of our food chain. The store strives to provide its customers with the broadest range of locally produced products in Door County.

Local vegetables, fruits, beef, chicken, eggs and brick-oven baked breads are just some of the offerings to be found at Greens N Grains. Our present system of growing food thousands of miles from its final destination, using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics and other toxic materials and delivering the product with petrol-guzzling trucks across the country, is a recipe for disaster for our planet. By growing much of our food as locally and sustainably as possible we can greatly reduce the burden on our sensitive planet.

Greens N Grains is presently working with about a dozen local producers to bring their products to one central location to make it convenient for consumers to have access to these foods. Kevin Kiehnau of Door County Angus Beef provides grass fed, organic angus beef, while Cassie Hitzman from Forestville produces pasture-raised chickens. Carmon Mabrey of Jacksonport’s Carmon’s Gardens grows produce, including everything from artichokes to zucchinis. This past winter has been very exciting as Cherrydale Farms of Sevastopol built a large greenhouse and has been able to provide a year round source of beautiful greens, Swiss chard, and spinach, along with the delicious multi-color eggs from their exotic looking chickens. If you are trying to source your diet from more local growers, you now don’t have to look very far to find those resources.
