History Mysteries

From the Ephraim Historical Foundation

Grab a deerstalker cap and magnifying glass, then channel your inner Sherlock Holmes to help the Ephraim Historical Foundation (EHF) identify the women in these three photos. Send your conclusions to EHF curator Cody Schreck at [email protected].

1) Because this image appeared on a cabinet card, it was likely taken in the late 1800s. All five women seem to be wearing wedding rings, and two are dressed alike. It’s possible these are relatives of Tillie Fobian Anderson. What do you think?

2) Augusta Jarman Olson (far right) looks to be 30-40 years old, which dates this photo around 1915. It’s possible this is a women’s group from the Ephraim Moravian Church, and an Anderson descendant may have donated the postcard to the EHF. On the back is written “K. Valentine” and the curious word “Rutabagas.” Is it the beginning of a shopping list?

3) Several clues indicate that this photograph, featuring five women in uniform, dates to the 1950s, give or take a few years. Rickrack trim, metal clamshell patio chairs, and slingback – possibly peep-toed – shoes are three retro hints. If you recognize these uniforms from an Ephraim restaurant of yesteryear, let us know.
