HUMOR

Peninsula Pulse Senior Correspondent Bjorn Bakken chronicles the events from the newsworthy meetings and councils of Door County’s towns and villages. When not present, Bakken reviews the minutes of these meetings to bring you the “pulse” of the news, almost as it happens. Here is his report from Ephraim, filed 15 October, 2008:

Directors of the Ephraim Planning Commission, in joint session with the Alcohol and Firearms Committee, held the third in a series of public meetings to air the concerns over the proposal by Wal-Mart to build a supercenter on stilts over the Ephraim Wetlands area. Since there has been no water in the wetlands since 1984, Wal-Mart is proposing the stilts only be 36 inches above the high water mark. The original plan called for 54 inches. Director Ed Swensen said it was important to keep the rooflines as low as possible so as not to conflict with traffic from the nearby Ephraim-Gibraltar Airport, and that Wal-Mart was attempting to help out in this regard with lower stilts.

Nors Swensen reported that revenues from the room tax were a gusher in July and the Village was awash in cash.
