Kewaunee County News Bulletin: March 25 – April 1

  • Kewaunee County will perform monthly siren tests on the first Wednesday of each month at approximately 11:45 am. The sirens are for outdoor warning only, and are not intended to be heard inside a home or business. To be warned indoors about severe weather, the Kewaunee County Emergency Management office recommends that each residence have an NOAA weather radio, which can be purchased and programmed at their office. Residents may also sign up for Code Red, a high-speed telephone emergency notification service that delivers notifications about tornado warnings, freezing water pipes, burn bans, persons of interest, public safety, missing persons and other emergency notifications.   • Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) is offering free computer classes at its Luxemburg campus at 133 Commerce Drive. There will be two sessions: 9 am-noon Fridays, April 8 to May 6, and 5-8 pm Mondays, April 25 to May 23. The courses will cover changing screen settings, opening Word documents, editing text, creating a graphic, creating and deleting folders, sending emails and attachments, surfing the Internet and much more. Registration is necessary due to class size limits. Call 920.845.5945 or stop by the Luxemburg office. These classes are grant-funded through Bay Area Workforce Development.
  • A public hearing will be held before the City of Kewaunee Plan Commission at the Kewaunee Municipal Building, 401 Fifth St., at 6:30 pm on March 29. The Plan Commission will consider a conditional use permit application from the Kewaunee School District to allow proposed land use and structures for school use, including to upgrade buildings and infrastructure, modernize classrooms, relocate classrooms, relocate athletic fields, relocate District Administrative services and demolish Hillcrest Building, in a P-1 Park District.
  • International Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated at the Algoma Youth Club, 620 Lake St., Algoma, starting at 9:30 am on Saturday, April 9. Events include a segment on photographing birds by Robert Kuhn, meet a turkey vulture from the Open Door Bird Sanctuary, and learn how to attract birds to your feeders and gardens from avian ecologist Kim Grieves and “birdscape” gardeners Mary Goodner and Cathy Pabich.
