BIRTH

Jessica Gilbert, Sturgeon Bay, is the parent of a daughter born July 20, 2015, at Ministry Door County Medical Center, Sturgeon Bay. Maternal grandparents are Teresa Gilbert, Sturgeon Bay, and Kevin Kennedy, Green Bay.

HONORS

Lawrence University has announced its dean’s list for the 2014-15 academic year. Students are recognized with dean’s list honors for maintaining a cumulative 3.4 grade point average or higher for the full academic year.

Among those recognized is Grace Johnson, the daughter of Janet Johnson, Ellison Bay, a 2012 graduate of Gibraltar High School. Grace is also interning at the Pulse for the second consecutive year.

Herald Alvin Smith

Dec. 23, 1923 – July 27, 2015

Herald Alvin (Smitty) Smith died Monday July 27, 2015 in his home on the shores of Green Bay surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Miriam who shared his adventurous life for 69 years, four children, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He started CRST (Cedar Rapids Steel Transport) in 1955 in a chicken coop and grew it into a national trucking company before he retired in 1978. In 1972, he and Miriam bought and grew Bayview Resort in Ellison Bay, where they spent their summers with their entire family and many friends. Smitty was chairman of the Iowa Motor Association in 1983 and on the Board of Directors of the American Trucking Association for many years. He was instrumental in helping start Four Oaks, and he also served on the board of Cornell College. An open house will be held Aug. 1, 1 – 3 pm, at 12037 Cedar Shore Road, Ellison Bay. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Unity Hospice.

Susan “Sue” Dawn Leonardson

March 30, 1961 – July 23, 2015

Sue D. Leonardson, 54, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away July 23, 2015, at Golden Living Center-Dorchester where she had been for the previous three days. Sue was a familiar face at the Neighborhood Pub where she worked for more than 25 years, and more recently worked at Kitty O’Reilly’s Irish Pub and Econo Foods. She will be deeply missed by her two daughters, Saya Levine and Shanda Levine; three grandchildren; her father, Robert Leonardson; three brothers, Butch, Bruce, and Jim; and many friends. Arrangements are pending with Huehns Funeral Home.

Alyce E. Schutz

July 5, 1923 – July 22, 2015

Alyce E. Schutz, age 92 of Washington Island, died at Scandia Village in Sister Bay on July 22, 2015. The children are following her wishes and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
