Local Contests Shaping up for Spring Election

The deadline is Jan. 2 to file nomination papers to get on the April 2 ballot for city, town, village and county board seats that are up for election.

A check of the filing report on Dec. 27 showed four Door County supervisors had filed non-candidacy papers and will not run for re-election: District 8 Supervisor Rodney Beardsley; District 9 Supervisor Daniel Austad; District 10 Supervisor Alexis Heim Peter; and District 19 Supervisor David Lienau.

Lienau, who currently serves as the county board chair, announced in early December that he would not run for re-election and at this time, no one else has filed to run for his District 19 seat that represents wards in the towns of Baileys Harbor and Liberty Grove, and the villages of Ephraim and Sister Bay.

Two candidates have filed to run for the District 9 seat that long-time supervisor Austad is vacating: Ryan Shaw and Jonathan Kruse. The district represents Wards 4, 5 and 6 within the City of Sturgeon Bay.

Philip R. Rockwell has filed for the District 10 seat that Heim is vacating. The seat represents Wards 3, 19 and 20 within the City of Sturgeon Bay.

Claire Morkin in District 7 is being challenged by Wayne Denil for the seat that represents Wards 13, 14 and 15 within the City of Sturgeon Bay.

The remaining supervisors are running for re-election and don’t have any challengers. That status could change by the Jan. 2 filing deadline.

Seats in the following municipalities are up for election: the towns of Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Gardner, Gibraltar, Liberty Grove, Nasewaupee, Sevastopol and Washington; the villages of Egg Harbor, Ephraim, Forestville, and Sister Bay; and the City of Sturgeon Bay. In addition, all five Door County school district boards will have seats up for election, and the Door County Circuit Court Judge seat held by the retiring D. Todd Ehlers has drawn two contestants: Door County Family Court Commissioner Jennifer Moeller, and criminal trial attorney Brett Reetz.
