Martinez Contemporary Tapestries Debut in NYC

Sandra and Wence Martinez, owners and principal artists of Martinez Studio in Jacksonport, exhibited their contemporary, handwoven wool tapestries in the Made section of the Architectural Digest Home Show in New York City, March 22 – 25 at Pier 94.

The Martinez’s were thrilled to bring their work to New York City for their first, large-scale design show. “Our collaborative work in tapestry builds a bridge between our respective cultures, and to be able to share this story on a national and global stage such as the Architectural Digest Home show is very exciting,” said Sandra. “The handmade movement is resonating with collectors more than ever before, and we’re proud to be part of that continuing trend.”

Wence, a Zapotec Indian, learned to weave from his father at the age of nine. Techinical studies in gobelin technique, dyeing, design and strong mentors provided the tools he needed to rise above anonymous production weaving in his native Oaxaca.

When Sandra (Hackbarth) appeared in his village in 1988 to commission one of her signature glyph designs – what began as an artistic connection led to marriage, children, and a life of close collaboration in their Door County studio.

Now, armed with over 40 years of experience, Wence’s work has transcended from a solely traditional craft to a contemporary art form, as captivating on the wall as the floor.
