Obituary: Carol Ann (Alwes) Newman

November 16, 1937 ~ October 28, 2021

Carol Ann Newman, 83, of Ellison Bay, died Thursday morning, October 28, 2021 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay.

She was born November 16, 1937 in Chicago, daughter of the late Arthur William and Dorothea Augusta (Hemmelgarn) Alwes. In the summer of 1953, the family moved to Fish Creek, where they owned and operated Alwes Food Market. Carol graduated from Gibraltar High School, where she met her future husband, Lester Newman. The two were wed in 1956 and were the loving parents of two daughters, Elizabeth and Barbara. After years of experience working in her parent’s store, Carol and Lester purchased The Ruckert Store in Ellison Bay in 1968 and renamed it The Pioneer Store. For 53 years, the store has been open seven days a week, except in 2006 when the store needed to be rebuilt. After 37 years of marriage, Lester preceded Carol in death in 1993.

 Carol will be mourned by her daughters, Elizabeth (William) Jorgenson and Barbara Greene; grandchildren, Dale Jorgenson, Kent Jorgenson, and Alexandria Greene; sister, Jane Yonke; and sister-in-law, Joyce Alwes. Her passing will sadden many nieces and nephews, her loyal, long-standing coworkers, and special friend, Erin Pugh. Her kindness and generosity will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Dorothy Alwes; husband, Lester Newman; brother, Arthur Alwes Jr.; in-laws, Paul Yonke, Mabel and Sylvester Monfils, and Beatrice and Charles Bassford; and nieces, Marie Monfils and Cynthia Alwes.

Carol’s life will be honored with a memorial service on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baileys Harbor at 1:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Lester, in Blossomberg Cemetery in Fish Creek.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. For those in attendance for the visitation and memorial services, masks are required.
