Obituary: John Louis Gabert

John Louis Gabert, 59, of Sturgeon Bay, died Feb. 15, 2018 at Door County Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 25, 1958 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of David and Janet (Fernandez) Gabert. John graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School and served his country with the United States Army. He was an accomplished craftsman, building log homes and furniture while living in Northern Wisconsin. John returned to Sturgeon Bay 17 years ago and worked for Bay Shipbuilding Co. as a shipfitter where he was lead man on his shift.

On March 10, 1997, he married Frances Kay Wardius in Rhinelander. John enjoyed woodworking, riding his Harley, and touring Wisconsin with Frances. He was a quiet, gentle soul with a rough exterior who often committed random acts of kindness.

John will be deeply missed by his wife, Frances; mother, Janet Haskell of Sturgeon Bay; father, David (Elaine) Gabert of Sturgeon Bay; daughter, Melissa Gabert of Sturgeon Bay; two step-sons, Shawn LeMieux of Sturgeon Bay and Christopher Wardius of Hartford, WI; siblings, George (Judy) Gabert of Texarkana, TX, Dave Jr. (Kathy) Gabert of Port St. Lucy, FL, Celia (Randy) LaVenture of Sturgeon Bay, Susan Oliver of Riverview, FL, Cindy Cihlar of Sturgeon Bay, and Julie (Steve) Lau of Riverview, FL.

He was preceded in death by his step-father, Roger Haskell.

John’s life was honored with a funeral service Feb. 21, 2018 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay.
