One Upset in April 1 Election

Voters delivered a big upset in the April 1 election, with Jacksonport farmer and town supervisor Randy Halstead in a landslide win over incumbent Dale Wiegand for the Door County Board of Supervisors District 16 position.

“I’m happy with it. Jacksonport really came out for me,” Halstead said the day after his win.

Asked which committees he hopes to be assigned to, Halstead said, “The obvious one is the LCC (Land Conservation Committee). I’m a farmer. Other than that, I’ll take whatever. I’m looking forward to a new challenge and I’ll try to do as good a job as I’ve done for the Town of Jacksonport the last five years.”

Chairmanship of the Land Conservation Committee will be up for grabs since Chairman Hugh Mulliken decided to give up his District 19 county board seat and make what turned out to be a successful run for one of the two seats open on the Liberty Grove Town Board.

In a very close race, challenger Mulliken’s 253 votes to incumbent Gary Farber’s 249 votes ensured him a seat on the Liberty Grove Town Board. The other seat goes to incumbent Lou Covotsos who earned 293 votes.

Those who saw the Liberty Grove candidate forum on March 22 may recall that Mulliken suggested town supervisors be paid $1 a month remuneration for their work on the board until the town’s debt is paid off. Supervisors currently earn $5,000 a year and $35 per diem per meeting.

“I’d like to add that as an item on the agenda,” Mulliken said the morning after his election. “As long as the town needs money, there’s no reason to pay the supervisors. None of them needs the money, I think. That’s just kind of a minor start. I think the town really needs to take a look at what they’re doing.”

In the Southern Door School Board race, Pamela Parks with 759 votes, and Katie Schnorr and Mike Toneys with 713 votes each won the three seats in that six-person race.
