Dear Mary Pat, Halloween is here and it fills me with dread. I hate horror movies, but now that I’m in college, I can’t get away from them. Growing up, we were never allowed to watch scary movies thankfully, but ever since October 1st it’s been fright fest in my dorm.

• Sixteen Egg Harbor businesses competed during this year’s Pumpkin Patch festival for the best pumpkin/scarecrow display.

• The Door County Land Trust recently purchased property south of the Village of Egg Harbor. This acquisition adds 50 acres of meadow and forest to the Door County Land Trust’s Lautenbach Woods Nature Preserve and protects over a half mile of open space along County Highway G.

My dad planted a Schwedler Norway Maple in our front yard around 70 years ago. It was an extremely hardy fast-growing tree, and my dad claimed that nearly every seed of the tree that dropped to the ground, or was carried to various places on our large lot, sprouted.

• Baylake Bank employees displayed rain barrels from Crossroads at Big Creek and Groundwater Guardians at the 2010 Baylake Bank Tall Ship Festival to support the organizations and to educate the public on the importance of water conservation.

Here we are again at the end of another Door County season. We would like to thank all of our regular readers and everyone else who has happened upon our articles over the last two seasons.

At the place called Liberty Square, there’s a waitress whose service is never spare. Her name is Cindi Hayes, and during her shift she’s impossible to faze, for she’ll bring your panini, so quick you’d think she was Houdini.

Libra (September 23 – October 22): You are destined to become the next Julia Childs and can call on Queen Victoria to assist you in the kitchen. Watch for a signal from the tower in Peninsula Park that suggests the time for you to bring out your garlic and eggplant casserole.

• The Door County YMCA is encouraging local youth to apply for the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. If selected, the chosen student could receive $1,000, a silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C.
