Pioneers Fall in Football Opener to Valley Christian

Three first-half touchdowns by the opposition were too much for Sevastopol’s eight-player football team to overcome Thursday night.

The Pioneers didn’t get on the scoreboard until the second half and lost their season-opening, non-conference contest at home to Valley Christian, 28-14.

Sevastopol cut the deficit to 22-6 in the third quarter when Oliver Mathews caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Logan Schuh.

Valley Christian responded with a third-quarter touchdown of its own, before the Pioneers closed out the scoring in the final quarter on a 43-yard touchdown run by Logan Frank, with Schuh running in the two-point conversion.

Schuh, who completed five of 13 passes for 61 yards, ended up leading Sevastopol in rushing with 100 yards on 15 carries. Frank added 67 rushing yards on eight attempts.

Alex Andreae led the Pioneers in receiving with two catches for 46 yards.

Up next for Sevastopol is its Peninsula Conference opener at home Aug. 31 against Gillett.
