Ridges Begins Fireside Series

Local historian George Evenson will lead a discussion on “The Role of Agriculture in Door County” as The Ridges Fireside Series continues on Nov. 13 at 6 pm.

A lifelong farmer, Evenson will share his observations about changes in agricultural methods, as well as social and cultural shifts. Evenson’s Norwegian grandparents were among the earliest settlers in Door County, establishing their farm at the turn of the century in an area south of Sturgeon Bay. Evenson’s parents bought their first farm in 1929, mere months before the Great Depression. Evenson has lived on the family homestead since birth, and he and his wife have raised their own family there.

Dwight Zeller will lead the final program in this year’s series, “Maritime Trade,” on Dec. 11 at 6 pm. Fireside Series programs are free and meet in The Ridges Marshall Cabin, 8288 Cty. Q in Baileys Harbor.

Although the orchids and other stars of spring and summer are no longer on display, there is still plenty to see and learn on the trails. Visitors can explore the Sanctuary at a quieter time with a naturalist-guided Late Fall Hike on Nov. 15 at 1 pm. The hike departs from The Ridges Nature Center, 8288 Cty Q in Baileys Harbor. Fees are $5 for members, $8 for the general public. Children under 18 hike free. For more information on these and other program offerings, visit RidgesSanctuary.org or call 920.839.2802.
