Door County public schools – Gibraltar, Sevastopol, Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island – are preparing to begin the 2014-2015 school year on Sept. 2.

The Southern Door District is kicking off the new year with a “back to school” open house today from 4:30 – 7:30 pm. This event is open to all students, families and the general public.

At 5:30 pm gather at the entrance to the school forest; the school will dedicate the donations of the Roosevelt School Bell from the Nimlos family and the Peshtigo fire-scarred tree stump from the Hillmer family.

Tour the school, meet this year’s staff and visit the Waniger School and school forest. Visit the Nature Center to participate in pond activities and check out the Schoolyard Garden.

Explore the physical education program’s new rock climbing and sensory sport walls and try out the new fitness machines in the Talon Fitness Center – all made possible by the district’s PEP grant.

Learn about new after-school opportunities available through partnerships established with the YMCA and Ministry Door County Medical Center. Sign up for the Y’s new Lego Robotics program.

High school students and their families will be able to follow this year’s class schedule and meet staff members in a special activity planned from 5 – 7 pm.
