Speakers Sought for Write On Events

Write On, Door County seeks non-English speakers to read poetry at a special event recognizing International Mother Language Day on Feb. 20. The reading will take place at 4 pm at the Miller Art Museum, 107 S. Fourth Ave., Sturgeon Bay.

Speakers of languages other than English are sought to take part. Native speakers are preferred, but English speakers who are fluent in other languages are also welcome to take part. Participants are asked to read a poem by a favorite writer of their native language, a poem from childhood, or a poem of their own creation. All ages are welcome to take part. The Write On staff is happy to discuss reading options with interested readers. If interested in taking part, contact Executive Director Jerod Santek at [email protected] or 920.868.1457.

The International Mother Language Day Poetry Reading celebrates the languages of the world. It also invites audience members to relax and listen to the music and rhythm of poetry, rather than focusing attention on the poem’s intent.

Write On, in collaboration with Door Shakespeare, also seeks submissions from writers and storytellers for their second annual Valentine’s storytelling event – Slings and Arrows – to take place on Feb. 13, 4 pm, at the Fireside Restaurant in Ellison Bay.

Slings and Arrows wants your love/not love story! Submissions are due Feb. 1 and should be no longer than 1,400 words, written in the first person, true, and able to be read in front of an audience of all ages. Submissions may take the form of story narrative, poetry, song, or other genres. Artists selected will have the opportunity to craft their writing and storytelling skills with representatives of Door Shakespeare and Write On prior to the event.

Whether you are a storytelling pro or have never performed in front of an audience; a published author or have never put pen to paper before, as long as you have a great real-life tale, you will have the support to participate.

All submissions should be emailed to [email protected] no later than Feb. 1. Contact the Door Shakespeare office at 920.839.1500 or Write On Door County at 920.868.1457 with any questions.
