Support For Fellow Veterans

Bill Forry, Commander of AMVETS Post 51, presented a $1,000 check to Kim Gilson, the Door-Tran Volunteer Coordinator April 5.

The nonprofit Door-Tran has been providing information about transportation options and linking callers for over 15 years. Door-Tran’s Veteran Transportation Program provides rides to veterans to and from VA hospitals and clinics in Wisconsin. There is no cost to the participants in the program, which is covered by grants and donations, and volunteer driver time also fulfills the local match requirements.

The program is a collaboration between Door-Tran, the Door County Transportation Department, and the Door County Veterans Service Office.

Door-Tran also provides transportation to all residents of Door County. Fares for that program are based on household income and a sliding scale fee of no more than 40 cents per mile – for any reason, in Door, Kewaunee and Brown counties.

“When veterans donate money to us, we make sure it gets directed to the Veteran Transportation Program,” said Gilson.
