The Limestone Land

On Sept. 14 at 1 pm, the Sevastopol Historical Society will be holding a historical presentation titled “Local Limestone in the Limelight” at the Sevastopol Town Hall.

When the pioneers arrived in Door County, they found an area of great beauty and great quantities of stone. They soon discovered that the limestone bluffs and base held a profitable commodity, lime.

Carl Scholz will take everyone back to the Silurian period when the remains of everything that lived on the reefs eventually compacted, and with the help of clean water, provided ideal conditions for the formation of limestone. Using limekilns, the early settlers soon learned to “cook” the limestone and come up with the finished product.

The program is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Lemonade, coffee and desserts will be served. Contact Linda Wait at 920.746.1230 or [email protected] for questions.
