The Sails Went on Sale and Are Going, Going, Gone!

The Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center’s annual street art auction, Sails Around the Bay, was held Saturday, October 3. The day got underway with an artistic opportunity for kids of all ages to be creative and “Chalk the Walk” at Graham Park, along the waterfront. Despite the weather, 21 entries did chalk a variety of designs, shapes and colors, and prizes were awarded at 4 pm to 11 of the participants.

The Sail auction got underway at 6 pm with a good gathering of bidders interested in the 12 decorated sails. After a fast and sometimes furious bidding battle, all the sails were sold generating approximately $11,000 gross proceeds to benefit Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center’s promotions, programs and city beautification. The auction crowd also voted for their favorite sail for the People’s Choice Award and this year’s winner was Gerald Richter with his “Boaters Paradise” sail.

The Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center sincerely thanks the sail sponsors, sail artists and all who supported the 2009 Street Art project and attended the auction. Next year will celebrate a decade of Street Art in Sturgeon Bay and at the conclusion of the auction, it was announced the ever-popular sturgeon will once again decorate the sidewalks in 2010! Any interested Sponsors and Artists are encouraged to contact the Visitor Center or http://www.SturgeonBay.net for more information on “Sturgeon Around the Bay 2010.”
