Two DCY Swimmers Qualify for Nationals

Six claim state titles

Door County YMCA swimmers Christy Braun and Jacob Norton advanced to compete National Swimming Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina March 28-April 1.

Braun and Norton advanced after leading the team to a fourth place finish at the state championships in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The team won six state championships at the event.

“It was a tremendous accomplishment, especially considering the youth of our team,” said coach Mike McHugh. “Our youth carried us, which is a  really great sign for the future.”

It was the team’s first full season without severe COVID-19-related limitations, which meant the team was short on swimmers with experience at the top levels of competition. About 140 swimmers participate in the program, an all-time high, but McHugh said many were new this year.

“Coming out of Covid it was really interesting to see,” he said. “We maintained our team size pretty well. usually 120 swimmers.”

Sixty-two of McHugh’s swimmers qualified for the state meet, which drew 22 teams from around the state.
