Vikings Sweep Pioneers in Baseball Twin Bill

Gibraltar/Washington Island’s baseball team remained undefeated on the season after sweeping a Packerland Conference doubleheader Saturday at Sevastopol.

Coming off an 8-5 non-conference home victory a day earlier against Crivitz, the Vikings defeated the Pioneers in the first game, 10-2.

Noah Greene recorded the pitching victory in five innings of work, allowing three hits and both runs, one earned, with a walk and three hit batters while striking out seven. Aaron Brey tossed two innings in relief without giving up a run or a hit while striking out three.

Of Gibraltar/Washington Island’s 13 hits, Hayden Reetz accounted for three of them with a triple. Rylan Caldecott added two doubles, Will Friedenfels tallied two singles, while Marshall Maltby and Brady Kita each doubled.

Sevastopol’s three hits were singles by Nick Peterson, Tyler Grooters and Mason Bosman.

Drake Olson, who gave up five runs on five hits in the opening inning, recorded the pitching loss for the Pioneers.

Vikings 13, Pioneers 1

Gibraltar/Washington Island won the second game over Sevastopol in five innings, 13-1.

The Vikings led 10-0 after three innings. Henry Bley plated the Pioneers’ only run in the top of the fourth.

Bennett Isaacson recorded the pitching victory in four innings of work, allowing an earned run on three hits with four walks and a hit batter while striking out five. Brey closed out the fifth inning, walking one and striking out three.

Grooters pitched the first three innings and picked up the loss, allowing 10 runs on five hits with four walks.

Gibraltar’s 10 total hits included two from Caldecott, who singled and doubled with 2 RBI and three runs scored, and two singles from Brey, who drove in four runs.

Up next for the Vikings, who are 4-0 overall and 3-0 in league play, is the resumption of the second game of their home doubleheader of April 11 against NEW Lutheran now slated for Tuesday.

The Pioneers (0-5, 0-4) have a conference doubleheader set for next Saturday at Peshtigo.
