Washington Island School Earns Green Ribbon Honor

The U.S. Department of Education has selected the Washington Island School District as one of its Green Ribbon Schools awardees for 2022. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources nominated the school district for the honor.

To qualify, nominations must include examples that demonstrate how a school has upheld the three main Green Ribbon School pillars by reducing environmental impacts and costs, improving health and wellness, and increasing environmental literacy.

“We are so humbled and grateful to have been considered for and honored as not only the Wisconsin ‘Sugar Maple’ School of the Year, but also as one of 27 other national public and private schools that have been recognized as a U.S. Department of Education 2022 Green Ribbon School,” said Michelle Kanipes, principal at Washington Island School. “I wanted to thank our school staff and island community for supporting all of the endeavors provided to our students that have contributed to this national award. We could not be more proud.”

Across the country, 27 schools, five districts and four postsecondary institutions are being honored.
