Whitefish Dunes State Park Safe for Hikers

Whitefish Dunes State Park continues to offer a safe place to walk during the 2009 hunting season and, as part of the Wisconsin State Park system, will continue to offer many benefits into 2010.

While the park will be open to hunting next year, all 14 miles of the trails at Whitefish will be a safe place to walk this year. People are encouraged to enjoy a hike to Old Baldy or a stroll along the Black Trail. Also, the entire beach is now open to dogs. Visitors should remember that pets must remain on a leash 8 feet or less for their safety and the safety of the park wildlife. Please be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your pet.

Beginning early December, the 2010 state park annual stickers will be available. Designed by high school students chosen in a statewide contest, the winning 2010 admission sticker, with kids playing on a beach, was designed by Margaret Willden, a junior at Cedarburg High School. It was selected from more than 340 entries.

Park stickers make great Christmas gifts for the family, friends and co-workers. For Wisconsin license plates, annual stickers are $25 and $10 for seniors (65 years and older). For Non-Wisconsin license plates, annual stickers are $35. Second stickers are available for half price for vehicles registered to the same household (except for Wisconsin Senior stickers which are already a deal at $10 each). This sticker can be applied date of purchase and is good till December 31, 2010.

The design contest for the 2011 Wisconsin State Park Sticker is underway. Entries for the 2011 contest are being accepted now through March 29, 2010. The design contest, sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, is open to all high school age students attending public, private, or parochial schools in Wisconsin.

Mark calendars for the candlelight ski on Saturday, January 30 from 6 – 9 pm. Volunteers are needed to set out candles, bake treats and staff the shelter building.
