Winter Fun at Whitefish Dunes

Snowshoe hikes, a bird watching trip and a candlelight ski, snowshoe and hike are among the naturalist activities that will take place at Whitefish Dunes State Park in January.

All events are free but a state park admission sticker is needed for entrance to the park. Some events could be cancelled due to inclement weather. Call 920.823.2400 to confirm events will be held.

Learn to “float on snow” and be active this winter by snowshoeing on Jan. 17 and 24 at 9 am and Jan. 31 at 1 pm. Follow the naturalist on a fun exploration hike. Bring your own snowshoes or borrow from the park’s limited supply. Meet at the Nature Center.

Join the naturalist for a winter hike within the dunes on Jan. 17 at 1:30 pm and Jan. 25 at 1 pm. Snowshoes/winter boots and walking sticks are recommended. Begins at the Nature Center.

Join amateur birders Bill and Sarah Krouse for a morning of winter lakeshore birding on Jan. 18, 9 am – 12 pm. Begin at Whitefish Dunes then carpool to various hot birding spots. Dress warmly, bring water and a snack. Trip may include a stop for lunch if birding proves to be extremely successful.

Make a simple bird feeder on Jan. 24, 1 – 3 pm, at the Nature Center Auditorium. Explore the differences between bird feeders and seed types.

Ski, hike or snowshoe candlelit trails at the park on Jan. 31, 5 – 8 pm. Ski among the forested dunes for 1.5 miles. Hike or snowshoe a 1.5-mile loop. Warm up in the shelter building with hot beverage and fresh popcorn. Visit the nature center for delicious baked goods and new exhibits. Limited number of snowshoes will be available. This is a free event but a state vehicle sticker is required.
