Wood Pen Turning Demonstration at DCAL Meeting

Gene Stanis will be guest speaker at the Door County Art League’s (DCAL) monthly meeting on Monday, August 25, beginning at 7 pm at the Gibraltar Fire Department meeting room.

For a change of pace, the public is invited as Stanis demonstrates wood pen turning. He uses wood of any type for his designs.

Stanis says, “I don’t consider myself an artist, but when I retired and moved to Door County I wanted to try things that I did not have time for when I was working. So I got involved in a variety of classes including woodcarving, painting, glass slumping, stained glass, pottery, metal forging, to name a few. I settled in to woodworking, since I have the facilities in my home.”

A resident of Baileys Harbor, Stanis considers his greatest influences as those artists from whom he took classes, mostly at the Clearing. He now teaches a woodworking class at the Clearing in the winter. Stanis, a former designer of computer systems and electronic products, says of his woodworking hobby, “I enjoy this medium because it has the beauty of nature contained within and gives me great pleasure as I work.”
