Construction on Highway 42 Starts March 30

Work includes some Sturgeon Bay streets, like Ashland and Neenah avenues

The improvement of 7.2 miles of Highway 42 that was to begin on March 23 was rescheduled to start March 30 due to forecasted inclement weather. The project will include work requested by the City of Sturgeon Bay on some city streets.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will do resurfacing and leveling improvements beginning at the south junction of Highway 42/57 north to the Bayview Bridges. Included in this work are concrete pavement repairs miscellaneous pipe and drainage improvements, replacement of some beam guard and new pavement markings and an asphalt overlay of existing concrete from Duluth Avenue to Bayview Bridge.

In addition, requested by and in cooperation with the city of Sturgeon Bay and the County of Door, work will be done on Ashland Avenue, Neenah Avenue, County U/Circle Ridge Road, and Green Bay Road as follows:

  • Ashland Avenue – widening the intersection radius for the southbound highway 42/57 right turn movement.
  • Neenah Avenue – widening the north leg of the intersection to create a right turn lane and combined through/left turn lane.
  • Construction of highway 42/57 right turn lanes to County U and Circle Ridge Road.
  • Widening County U to include a right turn lane and combined through/left turn lane.
  • Reconfiguration of the southbound highway 42/57 traffic lanes to maintain a single lane through the intersection and offset left turn lanes to improve driver perception/vision.
  • Removal of the concrete barrier and guardrail below the highway 42/57 overpass on the Green Bay Road northbound ramp and reconstruction of a multi-use path with new concrete sidewalk.

Highway 42/57 will remain open during construction but may be reduced to one lane in each direction during off-peak times. Some intersection turning movements and ramps will be closed for short periods when intersections are reconstructed.

The highway southbound right-turning movement to Ashland Avenue may be closed for up to 60 days. The highway 42 southbound right turning movements to Circle Ridge Road and to Neenah Avenue may also be closed for shorter periods while those intersections are reconstructed. The Green Bay Road ramps may be closed for up to 30 days. Access to various intersections may also be reduced to a single counter-directional lane to facilitate construction operations.

The access point for the multi-use path that connects to County U will be closed while intersection widening is taking place. Trail users will need to use the access point located on Tacoma Beach Rd. A section of the multi-use path that runs alongside Green Bay Road northbound ramp will be temporarily shifted when ramp construction/closure is taking place. The path will remain open through construction.Find more information on traffic impacts here: https://projects.511wi.gov/wis42sturgeon/full-project-overview/.
