Door County Activities: Building for Bluebirds at Ridges Sanctuary

The return of bluebirds to Door County in March is a sure sign that spring is on its way. In some areas, though, the returning bluebirds are having a hard time finding a home. Everyone can learn how to help bluebirds and build a nesting box to take home with a little help from The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor.

On March 13 and 14, The Ridges will sponsor a program titled “Building for Bluebirds.” The programs will start at 10 am and will be held at Girl Scout Camp Cuesta, 8026 N. Maple Road, Baileys Harbor. This program is designed for families, but all ages are welcome. The same program will be presented each day.

During the workshops, Ridges Naturalist Karen Newbern will share natural history and habitat needs of the Eastern Bluebird. Roy and Charlotte Lukes will discuss the importance of monitoring and recording use of nest boxes, and how that information can be reported to the Door County Bluebird Club, an informal network of local bluebird enthusiasts. Each family participating will have the opportunity to build a bluebird nest box to take home. All materials will be supplied, bring your own hammer if you like.

“Building for Bluebirds” is open to the public. The workshop is free, but a donation of $10 is requested to cover the cost of nest box materials. Registration is limited to 15 people for each program, so pre-registration is required by calling the Sanctuary at 920.839.2802.
