Door Shakespeare Presents Doorways: Creating Theatre For Children

Door Shakespeare is offering an educational summer program for kids called Doorways: Creating Theatre For Children. Last year, over 44 students participated in the camps and delighted audiences with their original plays, The Queen Who Wouldn’t Smile and Shakespeare: The Musical.

Founded by Professional actress Jennefer Ludwigsen in 2000, Doorways offers kids the opportunity to explore the power of language and creativity through developing original theatre. During each session students will play traditional theatre games, learn improvisation skills, and work with the rich poetry of Shakespeare. Ludwigsen will conduct the workshops with the assistance of Door Shakespeare’s 2012 acting company.

The camp includes two sessions: July 24 – 27 and July 31 – August 3. Classes for children ages 7 to 11 and for middle and high school students will be offered in the Bjorklunden gardens, simultaneously from 10 am to 12:30 pm. Younger students will focus on creating original characters and stories, while the older ensemble will work closely with Shakespearean scenes and monologues.

Each four-day session culminates in a performance of each group’s original play preceding Door Shakespeare’s performance of As You Like It.

Tuition is $75 per student and includes workshop materials, snacks, and a Doorways t-shirt. Four student scholarships have been made available by generous donations from The Cookery in Fish Creek and The Yum Yum Tree in Baileys Harbor. Discounts are available for families with three or more students.
