Fire & Ice, Short Film Fest & More Weekend Plans

Sturgeon Bay will take its turn hosting a winter festival this weekend as they celebrate their annual Fire & Ice Festival. Staying up north this weekend? Between Newport State Park’s winter programs and the Door County Short Film Fest, you’re sure to find something that suits your fancy during Valentine’s Day weekend.

Fire & Ice Festival

Sturgeon Bay’s annual frosty celebration kicks off Friday. Take a stroll downtown to watch amateur and professional carvers turn blocks of snow and ice into beautiful works of art. The fun continues on Saturday with a dinner dance, silent auction, free trolley rides and the “Another Slice of Fire and Ice Wedding Expo.”

Love on Holiday

Enjoy the creative results of a weeklong songwriting process during Holiday Music Motel’s annual Love on Holiday. Enjoy “songs of love and love gone away” at Third Avenue Playhouse beginning at 7:30 pm.

Celebrate Winter at Newport State Park

Newport State Park will be buzzing with wintertime activity when it hosts an “Animal Tracking” program on Saturday morning before volunteers line a one-mile trail with homemade candles for their annual Candlelight Ski, Hike & Snowshoe.

Wisconsin History in Objects

Join the Heritage Alliance of Door County as they host UW-Madison Professor Tom Broman and UW-Madison PhD candidate Adam Mandelman for “WI – 101: Our History In Objects.” This statewide collaborative initiative shows how history groups and private individuals can interpret and present history through objects. 11:30 am.

Door County Short Film Festival

Enjoy the artistic representations of amateur and professional filmmakers from all around the state during the seventh annual Door County Short Film Festival. Films are as short as 2 minutes and as long as 20 minutes. Catch the “Best of the Fest,” featuring People’s Choice films from each session on Saturday from 7 – 9 pm before voting for your favorite.

Slings and Arrows

Join Write On, Door County and Door Shakespeare for their third annual Valentine’s storytelling event featuring stories of perfect partners or evil exes, fantastic first dates or dates from hell, love fulfilled or unrequited. 4 pm.

Sunday, February 14

Door County Broomball Tournament & Sweetheart Skate

Come join this year’s broomball teams at the Sister Bay ice rink every hour on the hour from 1 – 5 pm and stick around to see who will take home the Highlander Cup. If you like ice skating, bring your skates or rent some for the annual Sweetheart Skate from 4 – 9 pm.

Music Educators Performance

Björklunden will play host to the Lawrence University chapter of the National Association for Music Educators for a performance showcasing their talents on Sunday. In addition to solo pieces and chamber groups, they will include the audience in the interactive portion of their performance. 1:30 pm.
