PenArt Spotlights Past Artists-in-Residence

Peninsula School of Art (PenArt) is celebrating participants in its residency program with a new exhibit titled Time and Space: A Survey of Artists-in-Residence.

Launched in winter 2022, PenArt’s residency program gives artists time and space to immerse themselves fully into their creative practices and pursue new projects and ideas – hence the name of the exhibit.

One of the main goals of the residency program is to help working artists flourish, PenArt artistic director Elysia Michaelson told the Peninsula Pulse in a previous interview.

“We have lots of opportunities to support working artists through exhibits, lectures, things like that, but we don’t have as many opportunities to support artists in the creation of their work,” Michaelson said. “We wouldn’t have those quality exhibitions without artists being able to really dive into their practice and challenge themselves.”

Since the start of the residency program, six individuals have been selected every year to participate. The six artists are separated into three pairs, and each pair spends six weeks at PenArt.

The artists who participated in the first few years of the program will exhibit their work in Time and Space through July 13, including the most recent residents, Morgan Thomas Shankweiler and Nicole Shaver. The artists are Ellie Dale Anderson, Zeja Z. Copes, Jonah Gebka, Maeve Jackson, Angela Johnson, Diana Noh, Heather S. Nuber, Cristen Shea, Wendi Turchan-Martin, Sara Willadsen and Natalie Woodlock.

Some of the work on exhibit showcases what the artists created during their residencies, while other work provides a glimpse of what new directions the artists have taken since leaving PenArt.

A reception will be held May 4, 3:30-5 pm, during which attendees can meet alumni residents and step into the studio to see what PenArt’s current residents are working on.

Peninsula School of Art is located at 3900 Cty F in Fish Creek.
