The Bulletin: Coming Up

Gibraltar High School will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Door County’s first team sport State Championship prior to its baseball game against Sturgeon Bay in Fish Creek on Friday, May 7.

In 1979 the Viking baseball team won the Class C State Championship, defeating Spencer under the leadership of the late Rodney “Chief” Billerbeck. That title remains Gibraltar’s lone team sport title (it won state titles in Cross Country in 1993 and 1994).

The state title was the crowning glory of Billerbeck’s four decades as a baseball coach. When he retired in 1988 he had more wins than any coach in state history.

A post-game reception will be held at Alexander’s restaurant in Fish Creek.

Sister Bay’s Economic Development Committee is considering starting a commercial kitchen in the village. Mary Pat Carlson, who helped start the Algoma Farm Market Kitchen, is leading the effort. The village has offered up to $4,000 to fund a survey and feasibility study to determine how many users would be interested in using the service.

Algoma’s kitchen now claims 53 participants who use the facility on a shared-use basis to create and package products to bring to market. Some Northern Door growers use the Algoma facility.

“This could be a way to keep those people working in our community and be an attraction,” said village president Denise Bhirdo.

An informational meeting with Northeast Asphalt in the basement of the Baileys Harbor Town Hall is scheduled for 10 am Wednesday, May 6. Residents are encouraged to attend to ask questions and gain information about sewer work and road resurfacing taking place in the town this spring and early summer.

The Door county Tourism Zone Commission will meet May 14 at 9 am in the City of Sturgeon Bay Community Room.

The meeting will start at noon, with a pre-lunch networking session with Ludeman at 11:15 pm. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased by calling 920.743.3113.
