Cana Island Lighthouse Restoration Wins Award

Immel Construction has been honored with the prestigious “Top Project of 2015” presented by the Daily Reporter, a Milwaukee-based construction publication. Immel was awarded for its work renovating the Cana Island Light Station in Baileys Harbor.

This project is the restoration of the historic light station on Cana Island. The rehabilitation of two historic buildings, including the lighthouse tower and the keeper’s residence, complied with the standards of the National Park Service and the Secretary of Interiors Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings. Immel Construction served as the construction manager for the project, and delivered the work under the original budget.

The light tower has been in ongoing use as a navigational aid for more than 140 years, and is currently operated by the United States Coast Guard. The original Third-Order Fresnel lens is still in place and is lit every evening, even during renovation. In addition to its duties guiding lake traffic, the light station is operated as a museum and tourist site by the Door County Parks Department in conjunction with the Door County Maritime Museum, and is perhaps the most iconic and photographed of all Door County landmarks.

Howard Immel Inc. is a construction services company based in Green Bay.
