Announcing the Judges of the 2013 Hal Grutzmacher’s Writers’ Expose and Photography Jubilee
The Peninsula Pulse is once again sponsoring the Hal Grutzmacher Writer’s Exposé and Photography Jubilee. The contests are held in the spirit of the late Hal Grutzmacher, a professor and Door County bookstore owner, by offering commentary and encouragement to promising writers and photographers from accomplished and professional writers and photographers.

Meet Amos – Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library’s Therapy Dog
Beginning June 20th, “Reading to Amos” will be held every Thursday at 10:30 am at the Sister Bay-Liberty Grove Library. Amos is Gloria Dougherty’s therapy dog who will be available for children of all ages to read aloud to him.

Used Book Sales Begin at Sturgeon Bay Library
The Friends of Door County Libraries will host used book sales in the basement of the Sturgeon Bay Library throughout June. Sales will be held 9 am – 12:30 pm on June 15, 22, 29 and July 6.

Peninsula State Park Digs Reading
Mention “reading” and most people think of books. Recognizing symbols on maps and traffic signs, discriminating sounds, understanding the humor of cartoons, and repeating simple rhymes and songs are all part of developing literacy.

Dickinson Poetry Series Features Cynthia Oliver
Cynthia Oliver will be the featured poet at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County’s Dickinson Poetry Series on June 12 at 7 pm. When Oliver retired from her massage therapy practice in the Chicago area in 1999, she sold her condo and journeyed to different regions of the United States.

Transylvanian Author Turns Decades of Research into “Dracula Chronicles”
For 40 years Victor T. Foia scoured libraries, museums, churches, monasteries, mosques and mausoleums spanning two continents. In the end, he utilized this vast knowledge of the subject to recreate Dracula’s world in a multi-volume historical novel.

Poetry Series Features Mary Gray Kaye and Introduces Chapbook
Each year the UU Fellowship of Door County publishes a poetry chapbook with poems from the Dickinson Poetry Series. What is Hidden, the poetry from the 2012 Series, will be released April 28 (Poetry Sunday) at the UUF.

2013 – 2014 Dickinson Poetry Series Announced
To commemorate National Poetry Month, the Emily Dickinson Poetry Series announces featured poets for its fifth series, beginning in April. Song, artwork and dual readings will be introduced to the series’ readings.

Local Author’s Novel Earns Cover Recognition
M. L. St. Sure’s Evensong was recently awarded the March 2013 Book Cover Award by Books in Sync and Cold Coffee Writer’s Magazine. Evensong is a powerful and captivating historical romance novel, set in World War II, about a beautiful, celebrated opera singer forced to sing the singspiel before Hitler.

Dickinson Poetry Series Features Rolf Olson
Rolf Olson is the featured poet in the UU Fellowship’s Dickinson Poetry Series on March 13 at 7 pm. Olson has called Door County home since 1980. He has been a craftsman in wood and metal for 25 years, working as a boat builder and joiner, designing and building doors, cabinets, furniture and functional objects in wood and metal.
