Still Time to Complete the Mammoth Hike Challenge

The Mammoth Challenge is on along the Ice Age Trail in October. Hike, walk, run or backpack 42 miles on the Ice Age Trail during October and visit three Ice Age Trail Communities to earn a hiking certificate and a limited-edition patch.

Sturgeon Bay is not only one of the 15 trail communities, but it’s also the easternmost terminus of the trail, meaning that hikers can begin or end their iconic, 1,200-mile journey in Sturgeon Bay.

If you haven’t met “Woolly” yet, it’s a great chance for a photo op with the fine-art piece created by steel-art sculptor Carl Vanderheyden. Woolly strikes an imposing figure in his new Bay View Park home (between Bridgeport Resort and Sonny’s Restaurant in Sturgeon Bay).

Grab a trail map from the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center at 36 S. 3rd Ave.; then log your miles over days, weekends, weeks or as one big adventure. You have the entire month of October to do it! Enjoy the colors; explore new segments; and get outside in the natural wonder of the trail. Registration for the Mammoth Challenge is free at iceagetrail.org/mammoth-hike-challenge.
