  • Letter to the Editor: When Voters Don’t Count, Representative Democracy Falters

There are serious and thoughtful discussions occurring throughout Door County concerning the availability of decent, safe and affordable housing in the county.  Most discussions are centered on the supply side: How do we induce and enable developers to build such housing? Very few thoughtful discussions appear to be focused on the demand side: How do we […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vaping Folk Hero

The “Your Reps in the News” article on Nov. 22 regarding Sen. Ron Johnson begins by telling us that he “has become somewhat of a folk hero on vaping websites since 2016.” Yay? I think nay. Apparently he “has scored a victory” for the vaping industry by most recently convincing President Trump to renege on […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Another Casualty in Trump’s War on American Institutions

The Trump administration has waged a quiet war on many of our institutions by dismantling them from within. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is the most recent victim. The CFPB was designed to be an independent watchdog for consumers. Congress established it in the aftermath of the 2008 recession to address problems relating to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Response to Conrad

Nathan Conrad [“Advocacy Group in Favor of Back Forty Mine,” Nov. 22, 2019] has dismissed citizens’ concerns about the potential pollution of the proposed Back Forty sulfide mine as “anti-mining rhetoric rather than proven, 21st-century science and technology.”  This is an incredible claim from the lobbyist who represents Aquila Resources, the Canadian mining company that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You for Making Rib Fest a Success

During the holiday season, when we are focused on kindness, gratitude and generosity, we want to thank those who helped to make the Neighbor to Neighbor 2019 Rib Fest a great success. First of all, we thank the chefs who represented the Carrington Pub and Grill, Door County Hardware Team, Casey’s BBQ and Smokehouse (a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Do Elected Representatives ‘Represent’ Voters?

Some of our elected representatives have lost their way. Many of them no longer listen to their constituents and instead follow the leaders of their party rather than the voters.  In a recent poll, 80 percent of Wisconsin residents supported common-sense gun laws, including both expanding background checks and the red-flag proposals. In response to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Conrad Letter Misleading

The Nov. 22 letter to the editor from Nathan Conrad, “executive director,” Natural Resource Development Association, is misleading. A few months ago, this person listed himself as “communications director.” His so-called “association” is listed as having only two people as associates. This man did not tell us he lives in Canada or that he is […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Reps Are Hard-Working – at What?

The first mass shooting in America occurred in downtown Philadelphia on Sept. 6, 1949. During the 70 years since, approximately 712 Americans have died in mass shootings.  When New Zealand experienced its first mass shooting in 2019, 51 people were killed. In less than one week, all military-style semi automatics were banned, and a $200 […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You!

Our family would like to thank everyone involved in supporting the Adam LaLuzerne Memorial bowling event. Adam loved to bowl, and those who participated and attended the event had a great time! A special thanks to Apple Valley Lanes for hosting this event and to the planning committee for all of the hard work in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Education Concern: What’s Next?

Gibraltar Schools are clearly some of the best in the state thanks to staff and parents, but is there potential for a dark future? When sharing successful teaching strategies during a presentation at the WEAC state teacher convention recently, I was surprised that aspiring teachers had not heard of Betsy DeVos, the Trump-appointed education secretary. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Most Accurate Weather Forecasts

I do not pretend to know everything about the English language, but I do know a superlative when I see or hear one. Toward that end, I note that the weather forecasters on all three TV channels claim to have the most accurate forecasts. One even claims to be certified but does not cite the source […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Advocacy Group in Favor of Back Forty Mine

The Natural Resource Development Association is an advocacy group of concerned citizens who believe that the environment and economy not only complement one another but should help communities thrive. Responsible resource development is the hallmark of a strong economy and a clean environment. When these two elements move forward hand in hand, a community creates […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Response

This is in response to the gentleman’s letter titled “Aha! Another Science Denier Has Been Outed” [Nov. 1, 2019, issue]. He questions how former President Obama is able to afford his beachfront estate. Maybe with a little research on legitimate sites and reading, he would have been able to find that out.  Unlike the “stable […]

  • Letter to the Editor: It Pays to Be a Good Guy

I would like to respond to the letter regarding President Obama purchasing a $15 million, 29-acre estate on Martha’s Vineyard [Nov. 1, 2019, issue]. I, too, am curious how in the world he could afford such a place. I know he was loaded with integrity and a decent, honorable character, but shekels? I don’t think […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Do No Harm

Having a private well report marked “Legal” does not mean your water is safe. The EPA is the agency that sets limits and updates them. Waiting for our EPA (Clean Water Act) to take action on this issue has not worked for the citizens of northeastern Wisconsin. What we all know is this: The best […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Big Support for Amos the Therapy Dog

Heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove library and the many library patrons, friends and neighbors who went to celebrate Amos’ 13th birthday last Saturday. Amos, a therapy dog, has been listening to kids read in this library for more than seven years. On his special day, there were balloons, numerous greeting […]

  • Letter to the Editor: André the Coward!

On Nov. 5 in Madison, our so-called state Sen. André Jacque rose to the challenge … of [Senate Majority Leader] Scott Fitzgerald. He cowardly reversed his committee vote in favor of the appointment of Secretary Brad Pfaff to lead the Department of Agriculture and instead voted to reject the appointment. All to please his master, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Contaminated Rainwater a Concern for Quarry RV Park

I would like to correct a statement by Mike Bahrke about the contaminated rainwater draining into the bay. In the photo of the quarry that I took for my book The Geology of Door County (1978), you see the dark area by the pen tip [at the right edge of the photo in the middle]. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Help Support Better Internet in Liberty Grove

If you live in, work in, hike in, shop in, visit or just love Liberty Grove, this is your chance to help out. In December, Liberty Grove will apply for a Public Service Commission (PSC) grant to improve internet service in our special, beautiful town. You can help out by writing a brief letter telling […]

  • Letter to the Editor: End Plastic Waste

In recent years, the issues of disposable waste, recycling and sustainability have become concerns for many. Seeing acres of plastic containers floating in the ocean is haunting.  Although local units of government in Wisconsin (including Door County) are tasked by laws and regulations to manage municipal solid waste, State Law 66.0419 (Section 1), passed in […]
