  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Misrepresentative’ Joel Kitchens

On Aug. 6, 2019, Joel Kitchens explained to me and GOP membership present that partisan gerrymandering in drawing Wisconsin’s legislative-district voting maps to perpetually guarantee Republican-party governmental control was being largely overblown in the media and by Democrats and was not the reason for the extremely lopsided GOP legislative majority seated in Madison.  Kitchens explained […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Poor Advice

I read credible reports last week that evangelical preachers in the U.S. are urging their parishioners to support the president in his hour of need because he is doing God’s work. In light of Trump’s claim, also last week, that he is infallible, I find it necessary as a citizen and a former student of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Aha! Another Science Denier Has Been Outed

According to the New York Post and many other media outlets, none other than former President Obama is buying a 29-acre, $15 million beachfront estate on Martha’s Vineyard. There he will take his rightful place among the compounds of the ultra-rich and privileged, behind the usual barriers to ensure that those pesty deplorables get nowhere […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Door County Environmental Council Opposes Quarry Village RV Campground

The Door County Environmental Council strongly opposes the 117-unit RV campground being planned for the abandoned quarry above George K. Pinney County Park and Marina. Concrete RV pads for Class A motor homes (coaches constructed with heavy-duty tour-bus frames) and the possibility and option of 115 single-family houses on all but two of these lots […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Voter Voices Silenced

In the 2018 elections, Wisconsin voters elected a Democratic senator, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and other statewide officers. In that same election, 53 percent of the votes cast for state Assembly seats were cast for Democrats. Despite this overwhelming Democratic vote statewide, only 36 percent of the elected state Assembly representatives were Democrats. By […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Do Your Job

If politicians on both sides of the aisle would simply do the job their constituents elected them to do, rather than being preoccupied with being re-elected, we wouldn’t be in the predicament we’re in today. The swamp is soon to be quicksand, and over what? Re-election.  One more important component in my theory: a leader […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You to MS Challenge Walk Donors

The 12th annual Door County 50-mile MS Challenge Walk was again a success, in large part thanks to the generous donors from Door County: Door County Trader, Econo Foods, Target, Egg Harbor Road McDonald’s, Al Johnson’s, O’Meara’s Irish Shop, Bay Shore Inn, the Sturgeon Bay Brownie troop, Sievers Fiber Art School, Sweetie Pies, Door County […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Gallagher and Johnson Complicit in Trump’s Quiet Assault on ACA

Since failing to legislatively repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Donald Trump has been busy dismantling it through a series of executive orders that have reduced its coverage and effectiveness, made health insurance markets unstable, and undermined the financial protection the ACA provides to millions of Americans. On his first day in office, Trump issued […]

  • Protect Yourself and Your Land

I have a question for the landowners renting land for manure spreading: Can you tell me when a nutrient becomes a pollutant?  We all understand how manure can be useful in daily operations on the farm and where it comes from. Landowners who rent now have added exposure and risks with manure that has been […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Fear and Ignorance Are Never a Basis for Running a Country’

As we continue to be assaulted by the bizarre behavior of this president, one has to wonder when the Republicans in Congress are going to find their spines. As we watch them trying to justify what the president has done and tap dancing around questions, it would be comical if it wasn’t so sad. They […]

  • Letter to the Editor: For Many, America’s Economy Is a Disaster

The Institute of Supply Management’s manufacturing index has fallen to its lowest point since 2009, the depths of the Great Recession. The new jobs number for September is anemic. Globally, China, Europe and Japan are all showing signs of serious problems, and Britain, with its self-inflicted Brexit mess, is flashing red. But even absent all […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Fair Maps and Gerrymandering

Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh said, “… extreme gerrymandering is a real problem for our democracy.” The Supreme Court held, though, that the solution to gerrymandering lies with the legislatures and not the courts. Wisconsin is a state where the politicians choose voters, rather than voters electing officials. Whether one tends to vote Republican or Democrat, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Opening the Gates to Future Interference

A Tribune article of Oct. 3 reports that Sen. Ron Johnson believes that President Trump did nothing wrong in seeking information from the Chinese government concerning the business affairs of Joe Biden’s son. This effort by Trump is coincidental with that of his Ukrainian affair. Not to be excused, but Trump acts because he simply […]

  • Letter to the Editor: May She Thrive: Thanks from WFDC’s ARTrageous Committee

The ARTrageous Committee of the Women’s Fund of Door County (WFDC) thanks the many artists, musicians, sponsors and volunteers for making our ARTrageous benefit a fun and successful event on Sept. 21, celebrating 10 years of the WFDC while celebrating the many and various women artists here in Door County. Special thanks to the Rehbergers […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Wake Up, America!

It is clear why Donald Trump did not want anyone to see his taxes or business records. He was a crooked businessman and has shown, for the past few years, that he is a crooked president. American taxpayers have funded State Department and Justice Department officials to travel to other countries to help Trump win […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Really, Senator Johnson?

Dear Sen. Johnson, In an interview with the Washington Examiner published on Sept. 2, 2019, you said the following about Donald Trump: “I personally like the guy. I tell people he’s engaging. He’s gracious. He’s very funny. That’s what liberals do not get at all. Those rallies are a policy-related comedy act. He’s a very […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Call to Rise above Partisanship

It has finally happened: the formal inquiry by the House of Representatives into the impeachment of the president of the United States. When I heard [Speaker Nancy Pelosi] pronounce the formal inquiry, I felt profound sadness – sadness that the country had to endure this trial, and sadness that the office of the presidency has, for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Response to Quarry Developers

We’ve seen the B movies where the developer wants to construct something that is potentially harmful and tries to convince the people through embellishment, not disclosing the negatives and promising   financial rewards.  It is my opinion that the script in the quarry-developer article needs clarification: (a) If approved, it can be used as a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Looking at Our Climate Future

If you’re a young person and have life-threatening concerns and no one seems to take you seriously, what do you do? At a time when I was young, the modus operandi was to keep it to oneself. These “duck and cover” drills were just a routine. No one actually talked about what they meant. No […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Those on Spring Road Thank You for Slowing Down

Thank you, thank you, Door County Sheriff’s Department! You listened and responded. The electronic speed sign warning drivers of their speed, while collecting data, on Spring Road in Fish Creek is wonderful! Cars passing our home are blessedly slowing down and driving much closer to the posted speed limit. Drivers have responded in a positive […]
