  • Letter to the Editor: A Call to Rise above Partisanship

It has finally happened: the formal inquiry by the House of Representatives into the impeachment of the president of the United States. When I heard [Speaker Nancy Pelosi] pronounce the formal inquiry, I felt profound sadness – sadness that the country had to endure this trial, and sadness that the office of the presidency has, for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Response to Quarry Developers

We’ve seen the B movies where the developer wants to construct something that is potentially harmful and tries to convince the people through embellishment, not disclosing the negatives and promising   financial rewards.  It is my opinion that the script in the quarry-developer article needs clarification: (a) If approved, it can be used as a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Looking at Our Climate Future

If you’re a young person and have life-threatening concerns and no one seems to take you seriously, what do you do? At a time when I was young, the modus operandi was to keep it to oneself. These “duck and cover” drills were just a routine. No one actually talked about what they meant. No […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Those on Spring Road Thank You for Slowing Down

Thank you, thank you, Door County Sheriff’s Department! You listened and responded. The electronic speed sign warning drivers of their speed, while collecting data, on Spring Road in Fish Creek is wonderful! Cars passing our home are blessedly slowing down and driving much closer to the posted speed limit. Drivers have responded in a positive […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Nutty Buddy

The mystery has been solved. I knew something was wrong when our family pet squirrel didn’t make his usual appearance for breakfast one day last week. But when he eventually made it home, I could tell that something was wrong. Maybe it was the way the left side of his crushed little body bore the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Deadly Summer

It’s been a short summer in Door County but a deadly summer across our country. The New York Times reports that this summer there were 26 mass shootings in the United States in public places and private homes. One hundred twenty-six people were killed and dozens injured. In three of the four deadliest killings, the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Against the Proposed Quarry RV Development

After more than two months of intense analysis, calm reflection and meetings with all parties involved, I oppose the proposed quarry RV development above George Pinney Park. Why? It’s the wrong place: This small-parcel subdivision with short-term rental turnover does not fit into the residential character of the area around it. The model for this […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Door Shakespeare’s ‘Red Velvet’ Reading Was Powerful

Nine people on folding chairs on an otherwise bare stage in an old barn. The director standing in the shadows during the entire two-hour performance, providing a few words of scene setting. No props. No special effects. But the reading of Lolita Chakrabarti’s Red Velvet, produced by Door Shakespeare on Sept. 16 at Woodwalk Gallery, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Car Show Disappointment

I was disappointed to hear that Sister Bay did not give the Lions Club a space for its car show for Fall Fest this year. The Lions Club gives all of its profits from the entrance to the car show to needy organizations. The Sister Bay Business Association should appreciate a nonprofit organization such as […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Strawberries

If you’ve not viewed the movie The Caine Munity, I highly recommend it. It has an incredible cast and stars Humphrey Bogart. Without giving away the plot, Captain Queeg is in charge of a minesweeper during WWII. His junior officers notice early on his unstable and erratic behavior after he takes command.  The kicker is, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Dairy Group Backs Proposals to Own Words ‘Milk’ and ‘Cheese’

Our dairy farmers across the state applaud the efforts of Sen. Marklein and Reps. Tranel and Oldenburg to create a clear distinction between real dairy foods and plant-based imitations. The results of a recent national survey about imitation cheese confirm the customer confusion: • About one-quarter of customers mistakenly think plant-based products that mimic cheese […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Northern Sky Theater Is a Gem

I have been living on the West Coast for 30 years and have very fond memories of Door County. I was able to show my grown daughters around recently, and we got to see the Sept. 5 performance of Dad’s Season Tickets at the new Northern Sky Theater – at the Packer-friendly hour of 3 […]

  • Letter to the Editor: “It’s Only a Squirrel”

One day last week, I was driving to work as usual. It was a day like any other – nothing remarkable about the route or weather – when suddenly, a squirrel ran out in front of me. I cringed as I felt the mass of his body lump beneath my tire. Just prior to crushing […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Noise Pollution in Egg Harbor

I love Door County for its many charms. I retired here after living in downtown Chicago for over 40 years. If I’d wanted the constant noise a city brings, I wouldn’t have moved to Egg Harbor.  This summer the village and a new business have disrupted our peace and quiet. Sure, we have the occasional […]

  • Letter to the Editor: My Observations

I have been testing the waters of Kewaunee County for over six years now. I think it’s time for the truth! We are in a water emergency, and it will get worse. My county will get little help from the EPA and DNR – this is not new.  What is new is this: We are not […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Rep. Gallagher and Sen. Johnson, Where Do You Stand?

As one concerned about gun safety, I’m heartened by the actions of U.S. businesses such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Walmart as they discontinue/reduce gun sales. At the same time, I support Target, Starbucks, Kroger and others that are discouraging the “open carry of a weapon” in their stores. These businesses are risking their bottom […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Protect the Quarry from a 57-Acre RV Village

A proposed Conditional Use Permit request for a “multiple occupancy and campground” variance for a 57.02-acre, 117-unit RV village at the old quarry on Bay Shore Drive is alarming. The site plan shows building numbers similar to Ephraim in a fraction of the square acreage. It will jeopardize the “natural rural environment, the shore land […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Unwilling to Accept Responsibility

The same self-interest-dealing, power-grabbing, corporate lackeys who demanded that the public and their Democratic legislative colleagues be shut out from the process dictating our current redistricting maps, and who willingly signed confidentiality pledges demanded by their own (GOP) leadership, are claiming under rules promulgated in their partisan “lame duck” legislation that they are worried about […]

  • Letter to the Editor: How Many Is Too Many?

Congratulations to the entrepreneurial souls offering rental properties in Door County. In addition to bringing tourist and tax dollars into local communities, this can maintain property values by keeping what might otherwise be seldom-occupied properties in good repair. Given the value of this element of the local economy, some further discussion can help to leverage […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Second Coming (Term)

Mr. President: Or should I say, Mr. Messiah? All this talk about you being “The Chosen One,” and Mrs. Sheldon Adelson calling for an amended Bible with a “Book of Trump” included, and evangelicals across the country pounding pulpits heralding you as the new King Cyrus (not sure whether that means you’re related to Billy […]
