  • Letter to the Editor: Living HIStory

I’ve seen a President assassinated, the murder of his assassin and the murder of his assassin’s assassin all broadcast on our black and white TVs. Later, I saw that President’s brother assassinated as he, too, campaigned to become our commander-in-chief. I’ve seen a Democrat – from Texas yet! – inherit the Presidency but decide not […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Keep Eyes Open to Abuse

For most of us, the coming holiday season brings a sense of joy, hope and renewed promise. However, for the victims of domestic violence, the holidays are sad days of struggle with feelings of never-ending hopelessness. Every nine seconds, a woman is assaulted or beaten in the United States. If you are one of the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Granary Is Diamond in the Rough

When you Google historic granary renovations and see what the possibilities are for this 100-plus-year-old structure, it is awe-inspiring. Surviving granaries, especially, have become focal points in many cities for tourists and residents alike. The Sturgeon Bay Historical Society sees these possibilities and has already raised enough money to stabilize and start reimagining its use […]

  • Letter to the Editor: So Frustrated I Could Scream

Let me see if I have this right. Paul Ryan is calling for sexual harassment training for Congress. So, if I have it right, Congress will be trained in how to comply with a law it conceived and passed. Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this picture? I’ll bet very few […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Addressing Gun Violence in America

The NRA and gun restriction advocates don’t agree on much, but they do agree that increasing funding for mental health programs in America would go a long way in reducing gun violence. Most of my gun-owning friends say that guns are a good investment; they rarely go down and often go up in value. I […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Time to Say ‘Enough’ to Gun Nuts

I am writing to commend you [this letter was originally sent to Congressman Mike Gallagher] and thank you and your colleagues, Rep. Martha McSally and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, for calling for a restriction on the gun modifier “Bump Stocks.” I was heartened by your statement, which I read in the Peninsula Pulse, that you spent […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Why the Cut Cut Cut Act Will Not Not Not Increase Wages

President Trump’s chief economist Kevin Hassett says lowering big corporations’ taxes will boost wages – by perhaps thousands of dollars a year per worker. Many of the other Republican supporters of the House and Senate tax bills are trying to sell them to the American people using a similar argument. Apparently, Hassett’s theory doesn’t rest […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Quantifying ‘Many’

We’re told “many” Ephraim residents would like sidewalks from the Old Fire House to the Beach, but “many” has never been quantified. Let’s consider numbers and the realities for Ephraim Trustees and taxpayers. At its Oct. 23rd meeting, Ephraim Trustees authorized a half-mile reconstruction of curb, sidewalk and storm water abatement before the Wisconsin DOT […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Tax Relief for Billionaires

Reading who will see their taxes go down and who will see an increase under the proposed tax plans seems quite confusing. Some middle class taxpayers benefit from one plan but see a tax increase under another. It seems so complicated until I step back and look at the broad strokes. Then it becomes clear. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Power to the People

I know that a whopping one third of this country believes that the President is doing a good job. I accept their right to their opinion, but I must question their judgment. Additionally, I feel I must add my sincere concern that the political party in power at this time, is not only an embarrassment […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Tourists in Door County

My wife and I had vacationed for more than 35 years in beautiful Door County before we moved to Ellison Bay in 2015. Our retirement plan included buying an historic building in Ellison Bay and opening a gallery – Lynn’s Pottery. We have been very pleased with the traffic and sales – of course Lynn’s […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Coward

Estimates are that about 10 percent of those in the military are involved in actual combat. I was one of the 90 percent who never shot at anyone or was shot at but I do know combat veterans and do believe that actual combat is one of the greatest maladjustments anyone can experience. We don’t […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Who Will Be Muzzled Next?

It is well known and easily observable that the current administration in Washington D.C. does not believe climate change is primarily human-caused. It is also well known that many administration officials have long-standing ties to the fossil fuel industry. For many of us those facts are both irrefutable and unfortunate. But now recent behavior has […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The First Amendment

The First Amendment to the American Constitution was written in 1791 and states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Gather, Spread Truth

Regarding the brief report on Ron Johnson’s comments as published in the Nov. 3rd “Your Rep in the News.” I sent the following letter to Ron Johnson via his website. Perhaps other readers will do the same: Hello Ron, I read with interest your comments of October 27th regarding the Mueller investigation. As reported in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Almost There, Mr. President

Mr. President, It is almost the one year anniversary of your historic, unbelievable, totally incredible, and very, very, very good election to President of the United States, a role you were born to play, and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate you for almost being the leader you said you were going to […]

  • Egg Harbor Losing Part of Its Charm

I am writing in regard to your Nov. 3, 2017, article, “Property Manager Hired for Egg Harbor Community Center.” As an Egg Harbor taxpayer and part-time resident I am saddened by the erection of the Donald and Carol Kress Pavilion. An idyllic village with a population of 201 didn’t need a $6.5 million facility ($1.5 […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Questions

In light of what has happened in the last month or so, I would like to put a different spin on the horrible events that have transpired. Let’s say instead of 58 people being killed in Nevada, a gunman gunned down 58 Senators in the Senate. Instead of 26 people being gunned down in Texas, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Legacy Will We Leave?

Proceeding down the highway, south, of Door County, along the west side of the road and approaching Wequiock Falls, a darling, wee Brown County park, one passes in view of a statue of Jean Nicolet, coureur des bois, celebrated “discoverer” of Lake Michigan and Green Bay, as he stepped out of his canoe to say […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Kitchens Wrong on Pot Legalization

Thanks much to the unnamed citizen who had the courage to question Rep. Joel Kitchens on the issue of legalizing cannabis in Wisconsin at his recent listening session, “Kitchens Listens: Manure, Marijuana and Mining,” (Oct. 27). Currently, despite federal laws against cannabis, no less than 29 states and Kitchens own birthplace of Washington, D.C. have […]
