  • Letter to the Editor: Thanking UUF for Presentation on Race, Policing

I would like to commend the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County for its regular Sunday service on March 5, 2017. The title of the message that day was “The Paradox of Being a Black Police Officer in Today’s Society.” The speaker was Corey Saffold, a law enforcement professional from Madison, sponsored by the Wisconsin Humanities Council. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Gut of the Community Was Right

When the first photos of the hotel plans on the Westside waterfront in Sturgeon Bay were published some time in the fall of 2014, our community took a collective gasp. Not only was the hotel design ugly, seemed disproportionately large, oddly placed in relation to the historic Granary, no, it didn’t feel right. Somehow it […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Indivisible, From Austin to Door County

My husband and I own a cottage on Little Sturgeon Bay, and we vacation there in the summer. Our main home is in Austin, Texas. My husband was born, raised and educated in Wisconsin. I graduated from high school there and obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin. Assuming that the anti-Trump […]

  • Letter to the Editor: There Are No Dumb Dogs

Recently, Paul Burton’s science column branched out into animal behavior. In his column [in volume 23, issue 11], Mr. Burton quoted “dog expert” Kelly Pulley in which she listed the five dumbest dogs. This column is so far off it could be listed as fake news. Ms. Pulley is neither a dog trainer nor animal […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Oppose Judge Gorsuch Nomination

The U.S. Senate has begun hearings on the nomination of Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. These appointments are for a lifetime and the Court’s decisions can affect every person in this country for generations into the future. Last year, Republicans in the Senate, including Senator Ron Johnson, refused to carry out their constitutional duty […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Facts, Laws and Ostriches

The Friends were right on the facts and right on the law. The ruling from Judge Huber finding in favor of the Friends is crystal clear. His unwavering conclusion and verdict is that the mayor is wrong in his attempt to sell the parcel which is wholly or largely owned by the state. The ruling […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote ‘Yes’ for School Referendums

The League of Women Voters of Door County urges residents of both the Southern Door and Washington Island School Districts to support educational programs in the school referendum vote on April 4. The elementary, middle, and high schools in these districts have demonstrated excellence in classroom achievement but resources are needed to continue that high […]

  • Letter to the Editor: To Gov. Walker: Don’t Ignore the Protests

As I listened to my morning news, it was not a journalist interpreting an event. Not fake news. It was the direct recording, the live words of our own Gov. Scott Walker. He was speaking at the recent CPAC, AKA Conservative Political Action Committee meeting. In attendance were governors along with numerous participants from across […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Write In Stephen Seyfer on April 4 Ballot

Dear Gibraltar Area School District Voters, You, the voters, will be given the opportunity to vote in the April 4 school board election. My name will appear on the ballot. I made the decision in December to submit my Declaration of Candidacy based on the information available to me at the time. As many of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Big High Five to Police Department

I would like to offer our Sturgeon Bay/Door County Police Department a big high five. Very recently they successfully perpetrated another major drug bust here on the Door. Something like 20 or 30 people were rounded up. Not so many years ago 11 illegals from Mexico were lassoed up and sent packing…long before Trump entered […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Consider My Candidacy for Gibraltar School Board

I am informed that Wendy Minten, incumbent member of the Gibraltar Area School Board and a candidate for re-election on the April 4 ballot, will soon relocate to an overseas community. While she did not know of her relocation at the time she submitted her application for candidacy, she has learned that Wisconsin election law […]

  • Letter to the Editor: I Ask for Your Vote, Gibraltar

With all the meetings I have during the month, on the town board and the county board, I have had little time to focus on campaigning. April 4th is right around the corner and I’m once again asking for your vote. I have worked hard to support the needs of our beautiful and historic town […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Faith-Based Community Centers Need Protection

In response to more than 100 bomb threats against Jewish community centers across the country, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin has cosponsored bipartisan legislation to address this latest crisis. The proposed legislation would ensure that the Dept. of Homeland Security provide state and local law enforcement with adequate resources to protect faith-based community centers across the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Write-In Candidate Seeks Support in Egg Harbor Election

If you are an Egg Harbor registered voter, or are about to register, I would like to kindly ask for your vote for president of the village board. Because many fellow concerned friends have encouraged me to run, I have decided I really would like this position and I feel we need a change of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Health Insurance Benefits Do Congress Members Receive?

Honorable Congressman Gallagher, It was with great interest that I read in the Washington Post about the Republican caucus’s proposal for replacement and/or revision of the ACA. As I requested almost two months ago, I was interested in your views and positions on this issue. I appreciate, but was frustrated by the excuses you and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You for Letter of Hope

Since November I have been increasingly despondent as I’ve seen my values regarding the environment, health care, social justice, respect for all peoples upended. So it was with great hope I read the Letters to the Editor page last Friday (March 10) with letters of concern from many but also the letter of hope, “Never […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Save Funding for Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

President Trump has appointed Scott Pruitt as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. The mission of this agency is to protect our environment, which is now being threatened at an alarming rate by climate change. If you believe in scientific research and its conclusions, carbon dioxide emissions are the primary contributors to the environmental […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Constitutional ‘Balloons and String’ Theory

Indicating clearly that there is little chance that he has ever read and/or comprehended any of the 2017 SB13/AB44 which calls for non-partisan legislative redistricting for Wisconsin, based upon the present Iowa model, while appearing on Sturgeon Bay radio Feb. 13, Senator Frank “Einstein” Lasee outlined a certifiably psychedelic flashback describing balloons, strings and random […]

  • Letter to the Editor: History In the Making: Sturgeon Bay Common Council Race

The best way to address crippling and demoralizing political polarization in our state and nation’s capitals is to forge the path forward to work together locally. And here’s our big chance: four women are running for seats on Sturgeon Bay’s city council. A historical moment and opportunity not to be squandered. Why? The November New […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Needs Support

I am shocked to learn that the president’s proposed budget eliminates 97 percent of the funding for The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative that strategically targets the biggest threats to the Great Lakes ecosystem, including toxic substances, invasive species and pollution. As someone living near Lake Michigan all my life, and active in efforts to protect […]
