  • Why Is It…?

Why is it that my husband insists on having exclusive rights to one of the rooms in our house?

  • An Outlook

When you live in Door County and own a business, one of the things you are required to do in the tourist season is answer the question, “What do you do in the winter?” I confess that I find answering this question wearisome, but I also understand why our visitors are curious.

  • Snippets From Science

    • A major goal in stem cell research has been to inject these unspecialized cells into the human body so they may become specialized into cells that replace ones lost through disease or injury.

  • Manners Matter

Dear Mary Pat, My friends and I have frequent arguments about where to eat dinner. They always want to go to the same restaurant and it is not very high on my list. It’s okay, say every four to five weeks or so, but not every week like clockwork. They know it’s not my favorite […]

  • Visions: Victoria L. Cerinich and Peter Wyatt

www.wyattsgallery.com Today, I read that another ice bridge broke off the Antarctic quickening the pace of polar destruction. Between that and the horrifying news of shootings by desperate people, my husband and I settled in for a serious discussion on the sustainability of the planet.

“Why Is It…?” was designed by Dr. Steiner to address readers’ questions about human behavior from a social psychological perspective in order to inform and stimulate dialogue about the ways in which our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are influenced by the presence of other people. • An Outlook

The city of Sturgeon Bay was presented with the much-anticipated economic impact analysis for the proposed Wal-Mart supercenter last month. The report was prepared by a firm called Vierbicher from Madison, WI and focused primarily on the impact of the new store on the city of Sturgeon Bay (though there is some acknowledgment of impact […]

  • Witness to Evolution

Roy Lukes has been the peninsula’s most detailed and experienced chronicler of birds and the natural environment for over four decades. For our annual Sustainability Issue, we asked him to reflect on the changes he’s witnessed in nearly half a century of observing Door County’s evolution – both natural and human-imposed. I began working as […]

  • By the Numbers

148,000 Malls and big box stores that closed in 2008 22 Million, the surplus of large-lot (a sixth of an acre or more) homes expected in the U.S. by 2025 107 Million tons of CO2 that could be saved each year if all Americans drove their cars 20 fewer miles each week 239 Million tons […]

  • Elegy Written on a Printed Page

Those of us who live by the printed word face troubling times. In the village I noticed a For Sale sign in the window of our local bookstore. And a young man who is a newspaper reporter in Madison called to tell me that he will again be furloughed a week without pay this second quarter of the year.

  • Door to Nature

There is a wildflower, the Hepatica, which appears to defy cold, rainy, even snowy April days; although this hardy native is always at its best on sunny days. Its genus and best common name are the same, Hepatica. Even though Gray’s Manual of Botany refers only to the Trailing Arbutus as Mayflower, many people in […]

  • An Outlook

These days, it is almost impossible to watch news coverage on television without being subjected to several commercials touting a prescription drug. Every ailment you have ever heard of, and a multitude of ailments you either never heard of or never realized were ailments, has some treatment available from some drug manufacturer or other, and all you have to do is “talk to your doctor about [fill in the drug name]” and you can potentially be on your way to a new and better you.

  • Jon Paul’s Maritime Diaries

The last issue left off with the Farrand H. Williams being libeled by the U.S. Marshall for unpaid seamen’s wages of $575, and the ship was sold at Manitowoc in January of 1885 for $1,500.

  • Manners Matter

A bit of advice on hospital room etiquette.

  • Door to Nature

International Earth Day and the first day of Spring, our Vernal Equinox – what an ideal time to pledge to devote more concerted effort toward helping improve some element of nature.

  • An Outlook

I mentioned last issue that April is National Poetry Month. For years I celebrated poetry in April by publishing some of my favorite poems in this column, but when I moved to the Peninsula Pulse other things came along in the April issues – just as they will this year – and poetry was left behind.

  • Manners Matters

Dear Mary Pat, I don’t know how frequent flyers handle traveling in airplanes so often. What is with people? During my one or two flights a year, I swear I see the worst in humanity.
