Inspired by a book written by Betty Christiansen titled Knitting for Peace, Judy Roy, a Baileys Harbor resident who is seldom seen without her knitting, said to herself, “I can do that!” So Judy volunteered to teach a Clearing Winter Program class, knitting all wool sweaters for children in Russia and other eastern European orphanages.

It was recently announced that $300,000 in grant funds is available over the next year to help dairy processors create and sell more products. The first cycle of the Value Added Dairy Initiative Dairy Processor Grant program began April 1 and applications are due May 30.

The Peninsula Music Festival is now accepting applications for its annual college scholarship. This three year, $1,000 per year, scholarship is to be awarded each year to a graduating senior who desires to further his or her education in music.

Peninsula State Park is accepting applications for a 2008 summer internship. The position involves a stipend of up to $1,200. This Invasive Species Intern will monitor and control garlic mustard and Phragmites at priority sites, as directed by the park naturalist; and, assist and/or facilitate three programs related to invasive species.

Four students from the Sevastopol Junior High Math Team competed in the State MathCounts meet at the UW-Madison campus on March 3. Team members Zach Klonsinski, Sam Potier, Renn Jervis, and Kyra Delchambre performed brilliantly at the regional competition in Sheboygan and earned Sevastopol a back-to-back team birth to the state meet.

Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay has been awarded a 2008 grant in the amount of $16,300 to support expenses for their Health and Wellness Ministry Coordinator and Parish Nurse services.

The congregation of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 316 Smith Drive, Sister Bay, was formally accepted into union with the Diocese of Fond du Lac as a full-fledged Parish congregation at the 133rd Annual Convention in late 2007.

The first Door County Sustainability Fair will be held on Sunday, April 20, from noon – 5 pm at the Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay. The fair is intended to inspire county residents to envision a more sustainable future for Door County by promoting ideas for a sustainable society.

The Volunteer Center of Door County is pleased to announce that the sixth annual Golden Heart Awards event will take place on April 24, 2008.
