  • Letter to the Editor: What’s DATCP Thinking?

DATCP (Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection) just concluded six public hearings across Wisconsin on the Livestock Siting Rules, ATCP 51. The purpose of the hearings was to take public input on updating the rules – the first time DATCP has done so since 2006 even though they are, by law, supposed to review […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Grow Up Already!

For many years I was a middle school principal. One of my responsibilities was to handle discipline problems that were brought to my attention. I served as a school administrator in a variety of public-school settings, among which were a minority population school district, a blue-collar community, and middle- and upper-socioeconomic suburban school areas.  No […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Altrusa Thanks Community Volunteers

A huge thank-you from Altrusa and more than 600 participating children to all the volunteers who helped with the 22nd annual Back-to-School Fair this year! Held on August 3 at the Sturgeon Bay Middle School, the fair provided grade-appropriate school supplies, new backpacks, new gym shoes and socks, school-spirit shirts, registration fees and several other […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Where Will It End?

El Paso, Texas, Aug. 3, 2019: Mass shooting at a Walmart, leaving 22 people dead. Midland/Odessa area, Texas, Aug. 31, 2019: Shooter shoots randomly at people along the highway between the cities of Midland and Odessa, ending at a mall, leaving seven dead and 22 injured. Sept. 1, 2019: 10 new laws go into effect […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Intention Was to Provide Safe, Affordable Seasonal Housing

Door County tourists have a plethora of lodging options such as resorts, motels, bed-and-breakfasts and campgrounds. What are the options for the seasonal and J-1 workers who come to Door County? Our intention was to provide a safe and affordable option for seasonal workers and the J-1 visa program. However, we were immediately met with […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Hearty Thanks from Ellison Bay Pottery

John Dietrich and Diane McNeil thank friends and family and everyone who was involved with their Ellison Bay Pottery 45th-anniversary party Aug. 18. The rain stopped just in time for the very wonderful musicians, Marybeth and Seth, to set up while Pink Bakery-Door County took over setting up the beautiful and tasty food. The staff […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Active Shooter?

In reading Richard Woldt’s letter today, I have to ask what he was getting at. It is disjointed at best and ends with statements with which I take issue. Although his career summary is interesting, his conclusions do not follow. This country is fed up with gun toting, gun loving and gun lust over weapons […]

  • Letters to the Editor: It Was a ‘Textbook’ Response to an Active Shooter!

I’ve taught trauma management for over fifty years, often working with victims of an active shooting. After Timothy McVey’s hate for Bill Clinton led him to bomb the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, I traveled the country with Florence Rogers, the sole survivor in the Federal Credit Union on the fourth floor, teaching Crime Prevention […]

  • Letters to the Editor: Cell Service Is Important to Business

I have seen some articles in your paper about the lack of high speed internet in Door County which can hurt growth and business expansion. Now it appears we have a problem with cellular service. Maybe this is just a far north problem, we live in Gills Rock but up here we have reached a […]

  • Letters to the Editor: Door County Seasonal Solutions?

I’m disappointed in the recent press regarding the proposed seasonal housing development on Ahrens Road. The article would lead one to believe that there are not numerous people, like myself, very aware of the season and permanent housing problems in Door County, but who do not see putting 6 international young adults in a 400 […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Preserve the Ellison Bay Ball Field

I wanted to reach out and share some thoughts about Fitzgerald Park in Ellison Bay – specifically the ball-field. I have heard that there has been some discussion about converting the ball-field to a dog park. While I’m a dog-owner and dog-lover and applaud the idea of a dog park in Northern Door I’m also […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Gallagher Voted No to Sensible Gun Control

There have been 9,092 gun deaths in the U. S. since the beginning of the year. Did you know that 93 percent of Americans, 89 percent of Republicans and 87 percent of gun owners support background checks for all gun buyers? (True according to a March, 2019 Quinnipiac poll.) Then why would our elected representative, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We Aren’t Winning, We Are Losing: Lives, Farms and More

More dots for all to consider and connect. The Republican Trump Administration Agricultural Secretary has referred to the backbone of America and Wisconsin, our farmers, as “Whiners.” Perdue was appointed by the Republican Trump Administration and confirmed by the Republican Senate. The Trump Trade War is taking its toll on the Wisconsin economy, once America’s […]

  • Letter to the Editor: From Ireland to Algoma to Riverdance

It was lovely to read the article about the [Algoma] murals project [in the summer 2018 Door County Living magazine, [doorcountypulse.com/a-communitys-vision-the-murals-of-algoma] as I was one of the Walldogs that took part in the event but I wanted to mention that I travelled a bit further than was mentioned in the article.  I came over from […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Christ Child Society Thankful for Community Support

We are grateful for the support of our generous community, attendees and businesses who made our Annual Fundraiser Luncheon on August 7 a wonderful success. Special acknowledgement goes to Door County Medical Center for sponsoring our event. The Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club provided a delicious lunch and beautiful atmosphere. Stone Silo Studios encouraged us to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Is a First-Grade Class?

A first-grade class is a group of six-year-olds, none of which look, act, think, behave, talk or grow in the same way. Its members are all victims of the magical age during which they pass from five-year-old babies to seven-year-old children. It comes with assorted needs, ranging from affection to Kleenex. It has stars in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Has Become of All the Actresses?

You won’t find any in a Peninsula Players program. Nor in a Time magazine story on the latest Broadway play. In fact, actresses are extinct! Now, female thespians are called actors, just like their male counterparts. Why? I don’t know. Who said media could no longer use the term “actress?” You got me! Sure, I […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Meanwhile, Back in D.C.

While we the people have watched in horror with mass shootings and occasional stabbings thrown in our Congress has continued to do nothing. Mitch McConnell, the obstructionist leader of the Senate, has more than 200 bills sitting on his desk that he won’t bring to a vote. Among them pertaining to safe elections and gun […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Field of Dreams

The West Side of Sturgeon Bay’s iconic West Side Baseball Field; no other field like it exists in N.E. Wisconsin and perhaps the state of Wisconsin. Families can sit on a gentle hill side, munch goodies and watch games as they did in bygone times. Leagues and kids play ball there. I moved back here […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s Get Real

There have been few United States Presidents who have done more to demean and erode our Democracy than Donald Trump. As a nation, we are being weakened by his insistence of pitting our political parties against one another. The fact that some choose to ignore the president’s continuous lies, weakening our relationships with our allies […]
