  • All opinions expressed in letters are those of their authors and not those of the Peninsula Pulse, its owner or staff.
  • Letter to the Editor: Be Part of the Solution

Bob Inglis, former Republican congressman from South Carolina, has stepped up with an imaginative proposal for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy: if House Democrats, as promised, form a select committee on climate change, Inglis suggests, McCarthy should appoint creative GOP members who “are ready to enter the competition of ideas” rather than deniers and skeptics […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thoughts on Our Democracy

The American public has been treated to a potent mix of musical chairs and a constant stream of members of the president’s cabinet and other staff leaving office in the last two years. Investigations thus far have shown that loss of political and financial integrity is widespread, making association with the USA undesirable. Not to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Government Shutdown

By shuttering museums, limiting access to national parks, and not paying TSA workers – just to name a few examples – they are taking the shutdown out on us as taxpayers by denying us the services we have paid for. It’s the legislative and executives branches who are not doing their jobs that shouldn’t be […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Hotel Jeopardizes Village

I have deep concern for what is taking place in Sister Bay. We fixed the hills and streets, buried power lines, got the waterfront in great shape for beach access and marina facilities. Then we started to remodel and build and are now planning to allow a 46-unit hotel occupy one of the busiest areas. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Powerful Message in ‘Saving Snow’

We Wisconsinites love our winters. Oh, we may joke about it (“Wisconsin. Come for the cheese. Stay because your boots are frozen to the ground.”), but the truth is we relish its quiet beauty and the outdoor activities ushered in by the season. Unfortunately, winters in Door County and across the country are changing, and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s Get Our Government Working Again

I’m finding it increasingly difficult to take the Republican Party seriously: After railing for years against increasing the deficit, under their watch the deficit is ballooning. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offers Democrats a civic lesson that any legislation requires the president’s signature, which ignores the fact that the House and Senate, if they have […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Pandora’s Box

I am responding to the Village of Egg Harbor’s spring ballot non-binding referendum legalizing medical and recreational marijuana. I am a “newcomer” to Door County, moving here two-and-a-half years ago from the western slope of Colorado. Pot was legalized there first for medical, then recreational use. Egg Harbor – be careful how you plan for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Steel Slats

Trump’s latest “beautiful wall” is to be built of “steel slats.” Think of that. As he demonstrated it on television it would consist of vertical steel columns, several inches apart. One of the purposes of this wall is supposed to be to stop drugs. So here is how the wall stops drugs. The cartels in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Country Held Hostage

The president has created a dangerous crisis by holding the country hostage to his non-negotiable demand for a wall. On one level, his behavior resembles that of a spoiled child holding his breath to get the proverbial pony. On a more somber level, it brings to mind the failed appeasement of Hitler by Chamberlain at […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Time to Dump ‘Bone Spurs’ Trump

“Bone Spurs” Trump continues his ranting and lies to the troops in Iraq today, even exposing a covert Navy Seal operation in the process. It has been reported that the silence of Republican leadership in Congress is due to the belief that the strength of our institutions will withstand his incompetence. They will not. His […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Uphill Battle to Protect Environment

Wisconsinites have a well-deserved reputation as people who love the outdoors. We love our rivers, lakes, forests and state parks. With such strong support for protecting our natural resources many Wisconsin voters naively believe that the politicians in Madison also share their enthusiasm for protecting the environment. However if they have been paying attention to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Yes, Santa, There Is a Trump!

Mr. President: Are you sure you aren’t moonlighting as Santa Claus, too? You sure seem as busy as Santa this Christmas, what with the gifts you’re giving us Adorable Deplorables, making America great again and protecting us from migrant caravans of nasty women and scrawny children. You’ve even found time to work on shutting down […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Trump’s Goals

It seems the Libertarians, ruled by the Koch brothers, want to eliminate all government; the evangelicals what to bring on the end times/Armageddon, leading to the Rapture and thus their salvation (and to hell with the rest of us non-believers); too many SCOTUS Justices want to destroy democracy as we once knew it and Members […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Save the Date

I grew up in a working class neighborhood in the Midwest. We had a bully and a spoiled brat on our block I vowed to my loved ones that I was going to put my satirical poison political pen aside for the holidays and wait and see how things play out next year. But, no, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Trump Slump

The president has made this a season without reason. The Trump Slump is upon us. Everyone should be praying. Colleen Malmen Baileys Harbor, Wis.

  • Letter to the Editor: Many Thanks for Bell Ringing

A big thank you and Happy New Year to all the dedicated folks who participated in The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign in Door County this year! Many thanks to the ringers who gave their time and braved the weather! A record number of ringing slots were filled in 2018!  Sincere thanks to Econo Foods, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Gardner First Responders Misrepresented by ‘Advocate’

The Door County Advocate published a recent article by Peter J. Devlin. The article title regarding the status of the Gardner First Responder squad is not only misleading but is inaccurate. And it did a great injustice to a dedicated group of emergency medical responders (EMRs). Devlin’s title caused the key fact that he presented […]

  • 2018 Letter of the Year: I Was Wrong

Each year we get hundreds of letters to the editor submitted to our desks at the Pulse, but only a handful stand out from the stacks. This year none struck us more than this one from Tom Torinus about Egg Harbor’s Kress Pavilion. At a time when so many leaders and citizens would rather stubbornly […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Season Greetings

In this most Holy Season two important messages come to mind that we need to think about every now and then:  “Love your neighbor as yourself” and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” How different our world would be if we all lived by just those two statements. This coming […]

  • Letter to the Editor: That Holiday Spirit

The holiday season brings about countless acts of kindness and generosity. My 93-year-old father was the recipient of such a gesture. No longer driving, he is homebound in his apartment at The Meadows of Scandia Village. Unable to be with dad on his birthday, I called his favorite restaurant, Al Johnson’s of Sister Bay, from […]
