Nickelodeon Writer and Author Visits Gibraltar School
On Nov. 15 and 16, Marc Tyler Nobleman will facilitate a writing workshop and give a presentation for Gibraltar Middle School students as a part of the Friends of Gibraltar theme, Write On, Gibraltar! The student writing workshops will focus on the skill of drawing readers in by writing compelling opening lines for both nonfiction and fiction.

Dickinson Poetry Series Features Chuck Sully
Chuck Sully will be the featured reader in the Dickinson Poetry Series on Nov. 14 at 7 pm. Born in Illinois, Sully was introduced to Door County by his grandparents when he was seven.

Council for Wisconsin Writers Opens Writing Contests
For the 49th year, the Council for Wisconsin Writers (CWW) sponsors its contests for work published by Wisconsin writers in the prior year. Entries published in 2012 are invited in the categories of book-length fiction, nonfiction, and poetry; short fiction and nonfiction; a set of five poems; outdoor writing; and children’s literature.

Green Bay author Nancy Sweetland will be signing books of her newly released romance novel, Wannabe (Wild Rose Press), at Book World in Sturgeon Bay on Oct. 27.

Verse Wisconsin is searching for poems to include in “Poems in Response and Gratitude: Ellen Kort,” for publication in Verse Wisconsin (April 2013). Kort has been like a godmother to Wisconsin poetry.

Book Sale Benefits Egg Harbor Library
A used book sale will be held on Oct. 6 to benefit the Egg Harbor Library. The sale takes place at the Bertschinger Center meeting room from 10 am to 2 pm.

Emma Straub Spends “Quite a Day” in Door County
Donning her signature bright lipstick, Emma Straub, author of the recently released novel Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures, spent September 17 gallivanting throughout Door County, the childhood home of her central character, Elsa Emerson, whose parents own a summer theater, the Cherry County Playhouse.

Door County can certainly boast its share of heralded authors. From Norb Blei, writer of 17 books of non-fiction, fiction, poetry and essays, to Richard E. Local Third Grader Earns National Recognition
Twelve children, including Sturgeon Bay’s Elliott Feldman, have been selected as winners of the national PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. The contest is part of an initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning.
