State Department of Tourism Statistics Released
Tourism spending in Door County increased again last year, but not by much. According to a report issued by the state’s Department of Tourism, visitors to the peninsula spent $271.2 million in 2011, which is a 1.6 percent increase from the $266.9 million spent in 2010.

Sturgeon Bay Paves the Way for New Sidewalks, Bike Lanes
One round of sidewalks will be paved this summer thanks to a Safe Routes to School Grant, and the Sturgeon Bay Common Council voted at its May 1 meeting to apply for another grant to bring more sidewalks and bike paths to the city.

Gibraltar Announces New School Superintendent
The Gibraltar Board of Education has chosen Tina Van Meer to serve as the district’s new Superintendent/Elementary Principal. The board unanimously approved a contract for Van Meer at a special meeting on April 30.

Egg Harbor Votes to Tear Down Old Lena’s Building
The Village of Egg Harbor Board of Trustees voted 4 – 1 to tear down the former Lena’s Sip & Chat building at a meeting April 9. When the board announced that it had purchased the building March 12 they said they would demolish it, but many residents urged them to reconsider.

First Assembly District Representative Garey Bies (R – Sister Bay) will seek a seventh term in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Bies, a former Door County Sheriff’s Department chief deputy, was first elected to the seat in 2000.

WPS Files for 9.2 Percent Rate Hike
Wisconsin Public Service applied to the Public Service Commission to raise electric rates 9.2 percent. WPS spokesperson Kerry Spees said the increase is based on economic forecasts from late 2011 and is necessary to keep up with rising costs for energy and infrastructure maintenance.

Liberty Grove Hopes to Squelch Hill Road Parking Problem
The Town of Liberty Grove will place “No Parking” signs along Hill Road to relieve parking congestion issues. The popularity of Base Camp Coffee Bar has resulted in overflow parking stretching up the road, and occasionally onto neighboring properties.

Century Ride Reaches Route Agreement
The Door County Century Ride reached an agreement with the Village of Sister Bay on a new route through Sister Bay. The ride, which drew more than 2,600 bicyclists last September, earned some complaints from Sister Bay merchants last year.

Door County Will Recount District 3 Votes
A recount of the votes cast in the District 3 Door County Board Supervisor election will be held Thursday, April 12. The April 3 election was won by Roy Englebert, who defeated incumbent Patrick Olson by just two votes, 198 to 196.
